Checkerboard Project #1: Winging it.

609 days ago by Retsof | 0 comments »

I have been thinking about what I could build for my 10 year old daughter for Christmas. She enjoys board games like Monopoly and Clue, so I thought I would build a fancy board game box to hold a Monopoly set with a drawer to keep all the money, cards, and game pieces organized. I looked at the others posted on LJ and a few other places on the web for inspiration and I played around with a few designs of my own in SketchUp. As with most things I draw in SketchUp, I was spending so much t...

Lap Desk #1: started with a pile of wood

900 days ago by JoeyG | 13 comments »

As you may know, I am currently working on a bookcase job. While it is only 6ft on one side and 8 on the other with a 45 cab in the corner. It is still big for my shop. It is the first cabinets I have done in a couple of years and is very enjoyable project so far. I have been moving this pile of wood around for 2 weeks and I am over it. There is a little bit of everything there. A chunk of padauk, walnut, rosewood, and some zebrawood. I think there are some others, but do...

UnNamed #1: extra box, what to do?

936 days ago by JoeyG | 4 comments »

I am starting this one with just a general idea of what I want to accomplish. A while back I made a batch of these boxes and had a couple of extra’s after orders where finished. I have decided to pull this one out and see what I end up with. The tiger/ambrosia maple is from the same board that I made the phoenix box out off. The “racing stripes” are made from rosewood. I don’t have any pictures of making this box but That can be a blog for another time. LOL ...

Celtic NOT - a journey

952 days ago by BritBoxmaker | 19 comments »

This is the blog of how I built Celtic NOT. The design is one of a recent series of overlapping circle designs. Originally there were two possible patterns These are the original paper models. As you can see the more complicated of the two had an interwoven line on the sides of the box as well. I eventually decided this pattern looked a bit too busy and opted for the simpler of the two. The box was going to be Oak with Sycamore and Walnut stringing. I initially tried making t...

My Steampunk Telescope #6: A Home For My Round Mirror.

1069 days ago by TelescopeMaker | 2 comments »

Special announcement! This will be the last in this blog series! I have finished my Steampunk Telescope! Of course, that doesn’t mean I am finished tinkering with it. That is the thing about Amateur Telescope Makers, we are never really finished with a telescope. But for all intents and purposes I am. When I point it at a star, it is well balanced and stay where I point it. It does shake to much when I adjust it, and it settles down within 3 or four seconds. Not fantastic, but no...

Wood Source: Is your wood legal?

1070 days ago by BarryW | 23 comments »

I found an article today on the internet how Gibson Guitars was raided by the DOJ. I thought maybe it was illegal workers, income tax, something other than what the article was about. Illegal wood. It was a complete shock for me. If they are raiding guitar makers….and to raid Gibson you know it’s a show raid to make as much publicity as possible….then it won’t be long when woodworkers are going to have to prove where the wood they use for projects will have to b...

Garden Bench #2: Construction2

Well I am nearly finished, construction is complete. I decided to go for a rosewood stain, so it would blend with the arms. Its a bit dark, but I like it that way. Hides all of my mistakes…At the moment I am giving it several coats of polyurethane.

My Steampunk Telescope #4: Applying head knowledge.

1292 days ago by TelescopeMaker | 5 comments »

Learning things about woodworking is like a lot of other things. You can get a lot of book knowledge and over intellectualize it, but in reality, there is no substitute for actually getting your hands dirty and doing it. I have been combing YouTube videos on everything from making guitars and violins looking for ways to do fancy inlays to how to do beautiful French polish. I read up on how to make non-splotchy stain finishes and how to smooth the wood with a scraper so that milling marks w...
