Checkerboard Project #6: Back On Track

572 days ago by Retsof | 4 comments »

I gave up on finishing this checkerboard project in time for Christmas, and then I was out of commission with a bad chest cold for another three weeks. Once I was back to 100%, I got to work finishing my White Oak Bookcase project. Now it’s time I got this one back on track. The last thing I had done on this project was to glue up all the squares for the top. I did half of the board at a time and then used my biscuit joiner to join the two sections together. I put in some time ...

A Guitar for Daniel #8: Done. For now.

597 days ago by Dan Lyke | 1 comment »

Daniel came back for another visit and said “yeah, it sounds really off at the 12th fret”. With visions of “oh, crap, we have to mill off that fret and move it” we started playing with things, and discovered that the bridge was in the wrong place. The bridge had individually adjustable string positions, so we moved them, and got a sound that was okay, but the bridge was also really too high. So I chucked it up in the milling machine, milled it down a bit, then t...

Checkerboard Project #3: Squaring Up The Squares

626 days ago by Retsof | 0 comments »

It was a good day in the garage. I need a few more like this one to keep me on track to finish this project and a few others before Christmas Eve. First I cut the pieces for the base frame, box sides, and the drawer fronts out of White Ash). Because I’m going to attempt dovetail joints for the first time on the box sides, I cut the sides by hand and jointed the edges by hand to make sure they were perfectly matched. My playing surface was about a quarter of an inch ove...

Checkerboard Project #2: Framed

628 days ago by Retsof | 0 comments »

I had a long day volunteering at my daughter’s school, so I didn’t get to put in much time on the project today. I did manage to cut the frame for the checkerboard from the rest of the White Ash that I used for the lighter squares. It’s amazing how diverse the grain looks considering it all came from the same single 5”W x 12’L board. It would have been nice if it was all like the curly sections. Some of the straighter grained sections look kind of boring by...

Checkerboard Project #1: Winging it.

629 days ago by Retsof | 0 comments »

I have been thinking about what I could build for my 10 year old daughter for Christmas. She enjoys board games like Monopoly and Clue, so I thought I would build a fancy board game box to hold a Monopoly set with a drawer to keep all the money, cards, and game pieces organized. I looked at the others posted on LJ and a few other places on the web for inspiration and I played around with a few designs of my own in SketchUp. As with most things I draw in SketchUp, I was spending so much t...

Lap Desk #1: started with a pile of wood

919 days ago by JoeyG | 13 comments »

As you may know, I am currently working on a bookcase job. While it is only 6ft on one side and 8 on the other with a 45 cab in the corner. It is still big for my shop. It is the first cabinets I have done in a couple of years and is very enjoyable project so far. I have been moving this pile of wood around for 2 weeks and I am over it. There is a little bit of everything there. A chunk of padauk, walnut, rosewood, and some zebrawood. I think there are some others, but do...

UnNamed #1: extra box, what to do?

956 days ago by JoeyG | 4 comments »

I am starting this one with just a general idea of what I want to accomplish. A while back I made a batch of these boxes and had a couple of extra’s after orders where finished. I have decided to pull this one out and see what I end up with. The tiger/ambrosia maple is from the same board that I made the phoenix box out off. The “racing stripes” are made from rosewood. I don’t have any pictures of making this box but That can be a blog for another time. LOL ...

Celtic NOT - a journey

972 days ago by BritBoxmaker | 19 comments »

This is the blog of how I built Celtic NOT. The design is one of a recent series of overlapping circle designs. Originally there were two possible patterns These are the original paper models. As you can see the more complicated of the two had an interwoven line on the sides of the box as well. I eventually decided this pattern looked a bit too busy and opted for the simpler of the two. The box was going to be Oak with Sycamore and Walnut stringing. I initially tried making t...
