Tree IDs #2: collecting wood

02-22-2009 12:07 PM by Gary Fixler | 13 comments »

You were! I’ve found my people. Let’s get started! cracks knuckles I thought I’d begin not with a tree, but with something very much related and interesting that I recently stumbled upon in one of my habitual all-night online woodworking research sessions: the IWCS, ...

03-27-2011 10:01 AM by TopamaxSurvivor | 13 comments »

I took the plunge today! I finally bought a Magswitch featherboard at Rockler. I have been eyeballing them for a long time, but too stingy to let go of $70! I thought I would just get a couple magnetic switches to make up my own. The other option is just making up an expanding rail to fit in the miter slot. Neither have gotten done, but I have been watching eBay for bargains on magnetic switches. Low and behold, I found one with about 900 pounds pull with a shape that that would easil...

First major blow up!

10-07-2011 04:53 AM by GodofBiscuits | 7 comments »

After some success with pens and a few bottle stoppers, I decided a bowl was overdue. I picked up a couple 2×6 rounds last week of curly maple and decided to see what kind of bowl I could fashion from one. I located center and attached the faceplate with some screws. My intention was to cut the bottom of the bowl for the Nova Chuck and shape it as much I could before turning it around and hollowing out the inside. I made the recess and shape the outside curve then sanded it to 600 grit. ...

Rockler Quick-Release Front Vise Install

04-18-2014 12:55 AM by Chris McDowell | 6 comments »

I’ve wanted a vise for quite some time. I was finally able to get one with some money I received for Christmas. I went with the Rockler quick-release front vise. I wanted the Veritas one, but there were other things I needed as well, so I went with the cheaper option so that I could get those other things. I don’t have a workbench yet, so it was a little more difficult to install in the worktable which I built before I really knew what I needed. It’s really just a big...

It’s time to get busy again. The LumberJocks Woodworking Awards Winter 2011 are officially here and this time we have a very creative theme that should result in many amazing entries.
