random #32: Rockler's March "2010 Master Catalog for Woodworkers"

1182 days ago by Gary Fixler | 7 comments »

Anyone get this in the mailbox this week? I was impressed. Every monthly Rockler catalog is 147 pages long with a simple, stapled binding. This one has a square, glued binding with no staples, and is 195 pages long. Too, every previous catalog I’ve received over the last 3 years is in the company’s blue and maple-ish tan coloring. Sometimes the heading bar and Rockler text inside it are a reverse of these two colors, but usually not. However, this one is all-white, of a much heavi...

Workshop Cookies Video Challenge

1186 days ago by Wiley | 6 comments »

Say what you like about the Bench Cookies, I really like mine. So when this contest came along I jumped at it, despite having no experience whatsoever making a video. But with the help of my mom as the onscreen actor, I think I’ve put together something fairly fun.

The Phantom Woodworking Show

1187 days ago by Kerry Drake | 12 comments »

Saturday my wife and I got up early (for us, on a Saturday) and hit the road to drive down to Marlborough, Massachusetts to attend a woodworking show I had found online a few weeks ago. We made the 86 miles drive in bright sunshine and good spirits, arriving at our destination 10 minutes before the show was scheduled to start that day (the website advertising a 3 day event, Fri – Sun). Imagine our surprise to show up and find an empty … nay, a desolately deserted … park...

Cookies for Christmas?

1266 days ago by Martin Sojka | 25 comments »

Seems like everybody is raving about the Rockler Bench Cookies lately. And this might be the right time to get a pack for your shop… I’d like to welcome Rockler in our growing family of the sponsors. Rockler decided to mix all our LJ advertising ingredients into one compact and, I hope, successful recipe. The campaign spanning 3 whole winter months will feature: Skyscraper banner on LJ Exclusive sponsorship of the Woodworking Skillshare and Tools, Hardware & Acce...

LJ Woodworking Awards - Winter 2010 #1: Announcement

1267 days ago by Martin Sojka | 32 comments »

The LumberJocks Woodworking Awards Winter 2010 is just a month away. This year we are focusing on just one category. The goal is to highlight the creativity of all of our members (regardless of skill level) through the use of materials that are available to all woodworkers. And here it is: Yin Yang – the dark and the light. Where would one be without the other? Create a project that uses colour (dark and light wood, stains, etc.) to convey how contrasts work together to make the whole....

As you all recall, We have been granted the use of the Lexington Woodworker’s Guild for our LJ Picnic Event. I still would like to present them with something in appreciation of the gesture – but am not sure what – any ideas? I would also like to thank Rockler for stepping up and sponsoring us with some goodies that will be raffled between the LJ attendees. Thank you Rockler! This really presents the same great customer service, and positive experience I’ve b...

My Tools #1: A very Robert Sorby birthday

1372 days ago by Gary Fixler | 17 comments »

Everyone’s going to hate me for this, but I just fell – not literally – into a lot of new Robert Sorby turning tools. The 18th (3 days ago) was my 32 birthday (for you programmers, that’s 100000 in binary – I no longer fit in 5 bits!). Mom sent me a box of Rockler goodies from my wishlist. In typical (for my mom) fashion, she overdid the gift-giving. She’s always been very supportive of my endeavors. Thanks, mom! I’ll have to make her several nice thi...
