Building a Thos. Moser Design New Gloucester Rocking Chair #1: Reproducing a Design

10-10-2012 03:16 AM by DustyMark | 5 comments »

I recently started a major chair-building project and thought it might be fun to document the process as a series of blog entries. So, here we go… My BackgroundI started woodworking in seventh-grade woodshop about 38 years ago. I began pursuing this wonderful hobby in earnest in 1986 and was fortunate to catch the wave of woodworking information put out by magazines such as Woodsmith, Fine Woodworking, and American Woodworker. I collected a significant personal library of books and...

Quick Fix? #2

09-29-2012 05:28 PM by greg48 | 2 comments »

It’s been just over 3 months since I first posted this blog to fix the wife’s patio rocker. It was so daunting that I put it out in the yard and busied myself with a couple of new projects, but it kept haunting me. Every time I looked out on the back yard, it just looked back wondering when it’s time would come again. Well, guilt ridden I am reporting that I did get back, just in time for the Fall/Winter season. I had to re-manufacture four replacement pieces with round mortise/tenon j...

Sculpted Maloof inspired Rocking Chairs #2: Fitting leg joints and slow progress

07-25-2012 02:15 PM by Ehren | 0 comments »

I’ve been chipping away at this project. Work is moving us in a month so any and all progress has been intermittent between getting ready to move. After a couple of attempts, the best method for me is to rough shape all pieces between the band saw, shaper, and belt sander before fitting. Once fit and g...

Sculpted Maloof inspired Rocking Chairs #1: Rough shapes and construction

06-06-2012 02:30 PM by Ehren | 7 comments »

For a while now I’ve wanted to build a rocking chair. I was finally tipped into starting the construction after my dad is retired after a thousand years and I found my wife trying to rock my kid to sleep in a folding chair in the nursery and so I’ve finally set aside my other projects and buckled down. In the purest form of logic I decided since I’ve set aside the time for one, might as well build two, just don’t tell the wife or father which one I make all the mistak...
