My mom went with me when I bought the wood for my first rocker and she realized I bought enough wood to make two rockers. She put her order in for one right then. Today is her birthday and mother’s day so I got started on the rocker. I don’t expect to get done until this winter because I don’t do much woodworking in the summer.
5/13/12 When I made my first rocker I cut enough rocker slats and back brace slats to make a second rocker. I got started by glueing up the ...

A deep red mahogany finish doesn’t have to be the result of a complicated process. I’ll show you how I use a simple two-step method to revitalize my mother in law’s old beat up rocking char. First, a coat of General Finishes Merlot Water-Based Dye. Second, a coat of General Finishes Brown Mahogany Gel Stain. Its all finished off with a nice satin lacquer topcoat.
Topics Covered:
Application tips for water-based dyes
Application tips for gel stains
The co...

I thought folks might be interested in seeing the steps that I take to make a Maloof style rocker. Perhaps after seeing how it isn’t really all that difficult to make one it might give encouragement to try and make one yourselves. These steps are for a mahogany rocker that I’ve finished.Started with quite a large slab of mahogany. This photo is after cutting 4 ft. from 1 end.
This is 1 of many templates I use. I don’t have to do any measuring for many of the necessary ...

I’ve just about have my cabinet project done and since I have no interest in watching a finish coat dry I’m going to start getting all my things together to do my first rocking chair. I’ve looked a long time trying to find a chair that I thought I could do and that would still be a bit of a challenge. A Maloof chair seemed like too much to start with – those joints are amazing. Since I have no room for a rocking chair in my house – I thought I would use this as m...

For a while now I’ve wanted to build a rocking chair. I was finally tipped into starting the construction after my dad is retired after a thousand years and I found my wife trying to rock my kid to sleep in a folding chair in the nursery and so I’ve finally set aside my other projects and buckled down. In the purest form of logic I decided since I’ve set aside the time for one, might as well build two, just don’t tell the wife or father which one I make all the mistak...

Ya that’s right the internet left my life since July 1st, I just got it back yesterday I have since finished the double rocker, of course taking pictures along the way.
I will update this blog daily still posting about how much work I did each day.
In this series I have now sculpted the seat joints about 90% done, the head rest is starting to take shape and let me tell you it’s a work of art! lol
I ” fixed ” the arm where it attaches to the leg then glued it...

I am considering offering a new special for those who would like to take my Maloof-style rocking chair class.
After talking to a number of woodworkers, I have come up with a “class bundle” offer for a week of instruction on rocking chair science.
If at least six (6) woodworkers sign up for any week-long (5 days) “class bundle,” then, by a drawing, one of those woodworkers will receive that “class bundle” for FREE.
Included in the five-day (Monday t...

I recently took a Maloof Rocker class with Randy Child and Charles Neil. They were both kind enough to let me video the learning sections of the class. In this video, Randy discusses the requirements for prepping the front legs to integrate with the seat.
I have lots of video but most of it has high levels of noise. If there is interest given these restraints, I will post a few more.
As for the class itself, I really learned quite a bit about shaping wood which is the largest require...
