worksharp tool sharpener - first impressions segment 2

755 days ago by Bob #2 | 19 comments »

I realized that I needed decent way to hang on to the correct angle on the worksharp. I began looking for a tool holder to use with it but alas, there were none available and Lee Valley’s holder would not work with this sharpener. Here’s what I came up with: I bought an extra ($10.00) hand held jig rather than make one as time is not my best friend. Next I stripped the roller assembly off the holder. I got a suitable piece of UHMW and marked it out for milling on the r...

Reviews - Books #2: Router Books

768 days ago by Dekker | 1 comment »

When I first started wanting to buy a router, I went out and bought some books on routers to give me an idea of what I could do with them, what to look for in a router, and also some jigs that would let me use them effectively. Well, at the time, The New Router Handbook (Patrick Spielman, 1993, Sterling, ISBN 978-0806905181) was the book of choice that was recommended reading. I picked up a copy and was absorbed by the world of routers, what they could do, what makes a good router tabl...

Reviews - Tools #2: Router Depth Gauge

769 days ago by Dekker | 2 comments »

I got this tool last year as a freebie when I made an order from Rockler, and I just tossed it in my router table and promptly forgot about it. But now that I needed to do some precision router table work, I finally got a chance to use it, and so I’ll give a bit of a review. Though I’m sure there are other examples of the same concept, this one can be gotten from Rockler for $5.99. Though they illustrate the gauge being used directly on the router, it is also useful for ...

Reviews - Tools #1: Delta Shopmaster Bandsaw - SM400 - A Budget Bandsaw

770 days ago by Dekker | 2 comments »

So I finally made an excuse to buy a new tool – a bandsaw to be precise. The problem is that I can not foresee a need for a heavy-duty model, nor can I justify its expense at this time. For that money, I could simply ask my wood supplier to resaw it for me for a few bucks. I went to my local BORG and could only find mid-priced models, $400-800. This was more than I was willing to spend. Then I went to Canadian Tire, since there is currently a 1/3 off sale (thanks MsDebbieP for pointi...

Reviews - Books #1: 7 Books on Boxes

779 days ago by Dekker | 10 comments »

Boxes and boxmaking have always been popular subjects for many hobby woodworkers. What other project type offers such variety in technique, finish, and final application? A box project can often be completed in a weekend, and noone can ever say they have too many boxes! The first place to start when considering making wooden boxes is to get some inspiration. Since the best place to get inspiration is to see other finished boxes, I suggest you start by looking through some books on wood...

Powermatic PM 2000 #1: Finally... a new table saw!!

858 days ago by Calvin Sphuler | 6 comments »

Well, I must say, it has been a long time in the coming but my time has finally arrived! I just got the go ahead from my lovely and kind wife Hillary to make that one purchase every aspiring woodworker dreams of. In my case, I have been dreaming of this day since the moment I walked out of highschool woodshop for good… the day I would purchase the table saw of my dreams. After I got the go-shead, I started doing quite a bit of research and found a lot of good saws. I knew that I w...

Another mixed bag from Grizzly

891 days ago by coloradoclimber | 31 comments »

Well I did it again, I ordered from Grizzly and got what I should have expected. I’ve been wanting a tenoning jig, I read some reviews, Grizzly is rated a good value, generally as functional as any other brands. I looked at the pictures of the grizzly and others and decided the grizzly looked just as good and was substantially less money. I’ll be reviewing the tenoning jig in another thread but for now here’s a short intro to other stuff I found in the box. I ordered...

Shop Tools #2: Work Sharp - The Wood Tool Sharpener Review

918 days ago by WayneC | 40 comments »

I have been looking for a sharpener for a while and came close to coughing up $250 for the Jet clone of the Tormak when the woodworking show was in town last month. I had also seen the Work Sharp on the web. Dan Like had seen one in action and given it his endorsement. There is a video of it on thier web site if your interested in seeing it in action. Wood Magazine has a review of it as well as a video of it in action. Two weeks ago when I was on my way home from the bay area I stopped ...

I got me a new Birthday toy

1012 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 16 comments »

Ever since I seen the review on the Triton Routers, I just had to get one. What’s a better time than on your birthday. Barb & I have an agreement about birthday gifts. We usually choose something we desire. That’s all the surprise we need. It arrived here two days before, so I’ve been holding back on reporting this to you Lumberjocks. After examining it in my hands, I have to say it’s the Cadillac of all of the Routers.
