I have been a bit frustrated, as I can’t use my shop until the outside portion of our house reconstruction is complete which should be very soon. I have been using the down time to restore my Stanley bench plane. As soon as I get back in the shop, I have plans to make a video tool review so I am quite anxious to get going!

I really like the Stanley Bedrock style planes and on a whim bid on and won this plane last week. I will be replacing my current #3 with this plane in my bench plane set. If you have followed the blog, I set a goal of putting together a full set of Stanley bench planes. The set is now pretty much complete with a little tuning planned. For example, I would like to replace my Sargent #8 with a Stanley 8C or perhaps a Bedrock 608 and have been slowly looking for one. Also, I still need to r...

I picked up this DeWalt Radial Arm Saw (RAS) for about $50 from a nice older man in southern Massachusettes. It was his father’s and had been in his family since it was purchased new in 1960.
Here is a picture of it “in the wild” ( as I found it).
I took it home and began cleaning it up, lubricating moving parts, and then gave it a nice coat of hammered enamel paint. I constructed a “Mr. Sawdust” style table for it and calibrated all of the alignmen...

I’ve been working on cleaning up this plane in the evenings this week and thought I would post some photos and description of the process. To begin with I had inspected and dissassembled the plane you can see photos and description of this process in the my earlier post “Handplane Resortation: Stanley Bailey #3 Type 10 before”. Hey folks! I finally have some photos to share. I will document the process in a coherent way once this stuff is taken care of. I’m currently de-rusting bits of the old jack plane.

So 1/2” thick glass is like 30$, and the 1/8” glass they sell at home depot and lowes cracks real easily (personal experience), but MDF with laminate on all sides is 6$.
I gave it a quick test run for lapping the soles of my #5, #4 stanley planes last night and it worked wonders. I think I have to pick up a different kind of spray adhesive though, the one I’m using leaves me sticky but not the paper… it is just normal sandpaper, the wet or dry is expensive and only ...

Well, I have been wanting a Bailey pattern 4 1/2 smoother for sometime now, but I am frugal, no darn it, I’m just plain cheap. I have been watching eBay and just not up for spending $30 to $50 bucks plus shipping. So inspired by WayneC and David’s blogs on plane rehabilitation, I decided to bid on an ugly duckling user plane, and after consulting with Thos. Stanley Bench Plane Restoration UPDATE
PDF ELECTROLYTIC RUST REMOVAL INSTRUCTION SHEET
My Stanley Bench Plane restoration project is progressing well. All parts have been cleaned of rust using the electrolytic rust removal process described in the prior blog entry. I was really impressed with how clean the parts were after the electrolytic de-rusting process.
As a reminder, this is NOT a plane with intrinsic collector value. I am restoring this “user plane” to be used on my bench...

The wood bug bites
After painting the house and finishing the shed, I got heavier into woodworking. I had now built several tables, and other projects, but was frustrated by lack of space to work.
The garage had been demolished by a previous owner so any wood projects meant driving to class or hauling my tools out of the shed and basement.
