My cousin (first, once removed if you're keeping score) has a knack for finding deals -closeouts, and so on. He recently found himself at Sears looking at some routers on clearance - all former displays, out of the box, never used, selling for $31 a piece. Too good a deal to pass up, he bought all four.
Of course, he didn't need all four, so calls were made to try to unload a couple before he got in trouble with the missus.
Sure. I'll take one or two at that price!
Naturally he w...

I Feel Boxed In
So without Kristin I headed to the shop. Big mistake.. I need to be double checked.
Mistake 1: Above you can see that I cut the dovetails on the front of the drawers. Dovetails go on sides! Duh…. Now they are decorative box joints. I will pin for extra strength.
Mistake 2: I did not chuck the bit tight. It slipped while cutting the dado for the drawer bottom. Here you can see the hole. I enlarged it for repair. (More on that later)
A view of the d...

Catch upThis is a project I started from quartersawn white oak scraps about three years ago. However, I got involved in other things, so it has been bouncing around in storage getting slightly damaged during the interim. I took it out to inspect it and start the finishing process; aka actually completing the piece. This is from “More Shop Drawings for Craftsman Furniture” by Robert Lange. The Little Journey’s Bookstand was originally made by Roycroft to to hold a set of books...

This project is a great example of the following old adage: “No good deed goes unpunished.”
A while back I was at church on Sunday morning. During coffee hour my wife was saying things like “You remember John, don’t you?” while I was talking with a few people. A rather subtle approach, I admit, but it got me thinking. Maybe I’d better do something to offset the somewhat irregular nature of my attendance. I noticed that a small side table in the paris...

In my last post, I mentioned my planer seizing up entirely. I couldn’t move the belts, and I couldn’t spin the knife wheel. I also talked about how insanely built the Craftsman 13” is, and I still stand behind that. I think taking apart my Toyota pickup’s engine might be less involved. I finally found the secret under the black slide-in plastic caps that the top rods sit in. There were access ports that let me undo some hex screws and finally lift off the top shrouds (...

I’m working at making something of a couple damaged and mismatched sections of barrister bookcase. The two sections are basically surplus from the “good” cases I have. These didn’t fit, one section was badly fire damaged and oddly repaired at one point. I thought I could make it a little better and more useful.
This picture shows the fire damaged section, the side had been planed down in an uneven taper, about 1/4 inch or more was taken out of the original oak. ...

His mother had sent a bed frame to me for repar and refinishing. I had recaned and refinished a bentwood rocker for her a few months back. Neither the rocker or the bed frame were quality pieces of furniture, but they were “sentimental.” The bedframe needed a couple of replacement rail hanger pins in one headboard post and a brace on the back of the headboard resecured and perhaps some glue inserted into a crack and clamped together. The four turned bedposts would be difficult...

I was going to draw bore peg the breadboard to the top today, but I had to do some fixing instead.I made the tenons the same length as the plan showed, they should have been longer, so there wasn’t enough material. I was afraid of the peg holes breaking out.
You should have about 3/8”, & I only had 1/4”.
To remedy this I epoxied some nails across the ends similar to the torsion bar on a guitar neck .
After I was all done I thought I could have glued in a wooden...

I just wanted to let everyone know, in case they don’t already. At our Used Tool Store we sometimes need to make repairs on tools in order to resell them. When we need parts we go to Tool Parts Direct (toolpartsdirect.com)
This is the best way that we have found to get parts for tools. If you go to the website and type in the brand and model number you will get a blown-apart schematic of almost any tool ever made. (Click on the schematic for a full sized view). There is also a parts...
