Warning: The letter W makes a lot of appearances in this post. If, for some reason you don’t like Ws, then just move along. I knew I wanted to add something decorative to the tool chest and my first thoughts were either a logo of some sort or a fancy word in ancient Greek or Latin (I’m a nerd like that). Since I don’t have a logo yet, I ruled that option out. I came up with a couple of Greek or Latin words that I thought might be neat, but decided that would be too much e...
After several hours of carving with my Dremel tool over the last two days, I completed the custom checkers for this project. This was my first attempt at wood carving and with 48 sides to carve, it was a bit tedious, but not too difficult. My skills improved a good deal by day two and I took some extra time to go back over the first day’s checkers and make sure they were all pretty consistent. I took some video of the carving process to post as a separate blog entry once I have...
This green man is from a pattern by the famous artist and woodcarver, Lora S Irish. The pattern is in her book, Relief Carving Wood Spirits: A Step-By-Step Guide for Releasing Faces in Wood . I love this book and Lora Irish has inspired me. After carving this pattern in my last blog entry I decided that I wanted to do a second version of the carving, only larger and deeper. As on the first carving, I transferred the pattern to the blank and cut the pattern on the scroll saw. The picture be...
About 4 weeks ago I carved this sun. It is a pattern by Lora S. Irish from her book, 101 Artistic Relief Patterns for Woodcarvers, Woodburners & Crafters. I really do like the patterns in this book. After cutting and sanding the basswood blank I attached the pattern and carbon paper and carefully traced the pattern by hand. As you can see this basswood is somewhat grainy. I didn’t think that it would matter that much. I began carving by outlining the inner wall ...
I’ve been trying to learn chip carving for about 3 months. I like to carve free form chip carvings. I’ve still not gotten to the point where I’m satisfied with my chip carvings but I can do it better than what I could three months ago. I also try to do relief carvings occasionally but I haven’t done very many. Anyways, for the first time in a good while I decided that I wanted to do a relief carving so I chose this simple flower since I’m a beginner. IR...
Artisans of the Valley was featured today (August 24, 2009) in a Trade Only Design Library (TODL) broadcast email reaching out to over 48,000 members of the design and architectural community. (Shown Right) This feature included an eye catching image of Eric M. Saperstein’s wildlife carving of a Ram. These horned sheep, as with most creatures in the wild, make excellent figures for detailed hand carvings. http://www.artisansofthevalley.com/blog/index.php/2009/08/artisans-of-the-valley-todl...
I was bored and out of mojo yesterday so I grabbed this piece of stump and relief carved out this ornamental flower on the face with a pattern and a 1/4 ” spiral bit in a hand router.I then fiddled around with a carver set and scooped out the petals a bit.Sometimes it’s good to try something you have no clue about.I’m going to paint the flower and set the stump out among the flowers in spring. p.s. you can see where I ploughed right through the bark in a couple of places....
