Folding Gun Rack #1: Drawings

788 days ago by Buckskin | 5 comments »

My fellow Legionnaires got called out today to provide Military Honors for a Brother who got orders to report to the CG above. While we were getting ready to go I mentioned I had seen this awesome portable gun rack (http://lumberjocks.com/projects/2847, courtesy of Proclamator) that we could sure use while we wait. Like all things Military, waiting is just standard procedure it seems. Anyway the boys (most old enough to be my Dad) where ecstatic about it when I said I had enough scrap layi...

Folding Gun Rack #2: In Process

761 days ago by Buckskin | 7 comments »

Well, I finally got some time to go back out in the shop and get some work done. Here is the Gun Rack in process. It is still rough not really sanded as yet. I hope to have it done next weekend, but we shall see.

Our Shop #1: Basic Layout

871 days ago by Lee A. Jesberger | 24 comments »

When designing the shop I tried to anticipate the type of work we would be doing. Looking back, I wasn’t even close. However, in spite of that, the work flow is very much the same for many woodworking projects. Our shop is laid out considering that work flow. Our entrance door is where we unload both sheet goods and solid lumber. We stack the lumber on stickers, prior to use, and the plywood is placed on a drywall cart. We place lumber on the chop saw station, which ...

log [drying] racks #1: the initial build

179 days ago by Gary Fixler | 5 comments »

This is a bit old now, as I built these starting in late March this year, but I’m expanding them a bit now, and wanted to post some updates on that. That requires getting off my butt and posting the original stuff I’ve dragged my heels on. With the trees that have fallen over, and the random large branches I’ve managed to find here in LA, I had an awful lot of logs for a 0.18 acre lot. I recently mapped out my tiny 0.18 acre lot, breaking it into 30 equally sized squares, an...

log [drying] racks #2: finished!

170 days ago by Gary Fixler | 14 comments »

I got the last 2 of the 5 sections built last week, sans the corrugated roofing. Here’s how I did it, at warp speed: This marked the first use of my new truck, for 2×4s and small ply panels from Home Depot. What a joy! As an aside, when I cut this particular 2×4 to length… ...I made a new friend. I think it’s a fat bird. As another side, whenever I stack up cut 2×4s like this, I get a terrific urge to build a deck, or workbench: ...

random #11: What a way to test out my new lumber rack!

247 days ago by Gary Fixler | 12 comments »

Last night I ran to home depot for 4 pressure treated 4×4s, 8 2×4s, and 5 sheets of 23/32” construction ply. Today, in bursts of uncharacteristic stick-to-it-ness, I actually put together the whole rack. On my lunch break from the office, I ran home and cut out 8 4’ 2×4s, 8 23-7/8” 2×4s, and cut the 4×4s not only to height (about 69”), but also cut in a 10° angle, and used Sketchup to plot the angle on the front leg to meet up with the back. I&...

Barrel Wine Rack #1: The Sides...

32 days ago by CaptainSkully | 4 comments »

It’s been at least a day since I started a new project/blog. My buddy Eric always says that projects are meant to be started, not necessarily finished. We go wine tasting in this rather industrial winery in Alameda, CA (we’re actually members). In their wine tasting loft is a very cute wine rack made out of wine staves. I’m at least as interested in their rack as their wine (far be it from me to pass up a nice rack). While waiting for other stuff to dry (that always...

Tool thoughts #15: Drywall storage rack

244 days ago by NedB | 3 comments »

I picked up several sheets of drywall, plus some cement board and even some pegboard in the past year or so… all for very little money ($20 total), and no immediate plans to use it… It has been cluttering up one corner of my shop. Today I decided that I would do something about that. I”ve got my newfangled workbench to complete, and that is going to need a spot in the shop before I can assemble it, Well, here’s what I did to get rid of the clutter: I cut the 2x mate...

Barrel Wine Rack #2: Inside Job...

30 days ago by CaptainSkully | 6 comments »

I glued support ribs along the insides of both sides to support the top and shelves. I also had to reinforce the top and bottom with cross braces. Since the wood is so irregular, I’ve been having to rely on great globs of glue to make contact. I used cardboard to create templates for each rib. I’m hoping that the large top support will give me enough glue surface to secure this whole thing. Without the hoops, the whole thing falls apart. I have to admit that I’m ...

A Visit from "Kev", a Fellow Lumberjock

932 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 5 comments »

Yesterday, I enjoyed an afternoon of getting to know a fellow lumberjock, “Kev”, otherwise known as Kevin Larcom from Wichita. He has a design for a Thorsen Table Challenge project, but didn’t have any wood. So, I set him up with some walnut and maple. I’m anxious to see how it comes together by the end of the Month. I loaned him my Sam Maloof, George Nakashima, Mira Nakashima, and Krenov books, so look out world, he can’t help but motivated to make dust no...
