1583 days ago by imelmer | 3 comments »

Well, I’m almost done. I finally had time to finish putting the pine sample piece together 2 weeks ago. This weekend I focused on the final product in oak. I have everything cut and drilled for the pocket holes. I put it together for now and I’ll start working on the sanding and finish work later this week. Parts Back view with pocket holes Front view with brackets and pocket holes No sanding or finish yet

Mom's Quilt Rack #2: Test Piece

1598 days ago by imelmer | 0 comments »

Since I haven’t done much woodwork since high school other than Pinewood Derby and making pens, I decided to make a test piece. I picked up some pine and after the boards were planed, I did the basic layout. I still have a lot of work to do, but I have the pieces cut out. I was debating how to do the jointery, but I decided to try pocket screws and glue. Maybe I’ll get a couple of pics when I get the holes drilled. For now, here are some pics of the work so far. ...

Mom's Quilt Rack #1: Plans

1600 days ago by imelmer | 5 comments »

I’m making a quilt rack for my mother. She didn’t want anything specif other than a wall mounted shelf with room to hang and display 2 quilts, so I just found some projects others have made and will be adding my own style. Hopefully she will like it. This is a very basic project, but I’ve wanted to learn more about how to use SketchUp, so I took the time to draw up some plans. I haven’t decided if I’ll be using pine or oak. If it turns out well, I might ...

Happy Fathers Day to all of my LumberJock buddies, and a belated Happy Mothers Day to all of the Lady Jocks! I am looking forward to using the LumberJock CyberToolShare feature to explore everyone’s shop and check out what goodies you all got for Fathers Day! I had the privilege and pleasure of spending the last two days working in my shop. I made a lot of progress on my cherry quilt chests. I am under a time crunch as these need to be delivered at the end of the month, so it was great...

Quarter Size Cherry Quilt Chests #4: Tom's Domino at Work!

2502 days ago by David | 18 comments »

Cherry Chest Update Well I got to squeeze in some time out in the shop and work on the cherry chests that are being built for the Annual Quilt Show in Sisters, Oregon. They will be on display at The Clearwater Gallery. I could not resist the new LumberJock CyberToolShare s feature, so I hopped on the internet late one night and borrowed Tom’s Festool Domino. I used the Domino to assemble the frame and panels into the final box. The Domino was amazingly quick. So quick, that I...

Quarter Size Cherry Quilt Chests #3: Leigh FMT Jig - Part 2

2528 days ago by David | 8 comments »

Well, this is the second of the LEIGH FMT Jig videos. Again please excuse the ameteur quality. This is just my way of sharing a fun day in the shop while pushing my digital envelope, so to say. Things have been a bit hectic here so it was good to get some dedicated time in the shop. Many thanks to my wife for allowing this indulgance! I thought a video post would be fun to explore since I have learned so much from my fellow woodworkers via digital imagery. I am not sure what I am going to ...

Quarter Size Cherry Quilt Chests #2: Leigh FMT Jig - Part 1

2528 days ago by David | 11 comments »

Had a great day today working in the shop. I have gotten behind on my schedule for the cherry quilt chests because of some family isuues and increased work load. Today was a warm and sunny day in Portland and it was a pleasure to get out in the shop and make some cherry sawdust! I thought it would be fun to make a small video to share the experience. The original video was too long so I made a two part episode. I figured you guys would be the only ones that could actually sit and watch a rout...
