What makes a good mallet?

291 days ago by Karson | 15 comments »

People post blogs and projects about mallets. I don’t have one but I’d like to make one. Do I want one small and knimble (Brass etc about 1 1.5lbs) or a 3 – 5 lb clunker. It seems that the one’s I’ve seen shown here are either square with a sloped face and a handle or a round one with an oval shape. I currently use a blaock of Osage Orange that is a cutoff from a gavel that I made. It’s about 3” long and 3” across (round) and no handle....

What kind of tree is this?

308 days ago by Allison | 16 comments »

I do not know if this is the place to post this, I hope it is. I have a question regarding this tree. It was in the medium of a four lane road in southern California (Knotts Berry farm/ Disneyland) placed along with palm trees. I have driven down this particular road a zillion times but just now noticed it. The palm trees overwhelm it. For the rest of my stay down there i never saw another one. So my question is What kind of tree is this? Does anyone know? Those spike things are hard. It is...

Baby Furniture #1: Baby Furniture Adventure Begins

168 days ago by Kevin | 6 comments »

My wife and I are expecting our first child to be born in the first part of September. I am going to attempt to build some baby furniture for him. I have never built any baby furniture and would love to get some ideas, suggestions, input from those that have. I think we have decided on building a crib. We haven’t decided on whether to build a convertible crib or just a regular crib. My first question is that when you change the convertible crib into a full size bed, what do you do...

Woodworking Schools in the Pacific Northwest (Washington / NW Oregon)

77 days ago by Jojo | 5 comments »

NOTA: This is a mirror of a forum post of mine. I’ve reproduced it here to get maximum exposure. I hope this don’t bother you at all, otherwise please accept my apologies for the doublet. . Hi folks, Today I come to you asking for some help and guidance. I’m researching woodworking schools in the state of Washington (or the Portland, OR area). The kind of school I’m looking for is the one that has full-time programs for a whole school year or two. I do know some of th...

Acquiring new tools #1: Anyone been to or going to the Grizzly Tent Sale this Saturday

180 days ago by Kevin | 5 comments »

I think I will be heading to Springfield, MO on Saturday for the Grizzly Tent Sale. As long as I can convince the wife not to kick me out afterwards that is. I’m still looking for a 20” planer, and I think I’ll go with the Grizzly. Anyone else going? Anyone else ever been that would have some advice for us newbies? What time to get there is my biggest question? I am going for one very specific item and do not want to miss out on it. Sale is from 8am to 3pm.

Jewelry Box #2: Top veneer

256 days ago by Woodshopfreak | 9 comments »

I have picked out the venner I will be useing for the top of my jewlery box. I decided on birds eye maple. Now alot of people said to get some kind of rosewood veneer, but the birds eye maple was so beautiful and I couldn’t resist. I am going to be staining the oak with a nice brownish golden look, and the maple will probobly just be left the way that it is. It should look good with the oak when the oak is stained. I want to hear what you think about this choice. I think that it could b...

Disston Dovetail Saw Restoration #1: I've got questions... Please Help

18 days ago by Blake | 11 comments »

I found this beautiful old saw hanging on my wall yesterday. I think I bought it at at the flea market a while back and forgot about it. Its really nice, but its been abused and neglected. Its time for a face lift. I am assuming it is a dovetail saw? I want to know more about it. I would like to become more of a hand tool user. On the blade it says ”HENRY DISSTON AND SONS, CAST STEEL, PHILADA.USA, WARRENTED” And the handle says ”C. ROSENBURG” on both sides. It al...

I FINALLY BOUGHT A TABLESAW! :-D #3: Beginning The Negotiations....

228 days ago by Mark D. | 12 comments »

Ok, so I called Woodcraft and Jet, the people at Jet were far easier to talk to and more appologetic of the situation, but regardelss, neither were able to offer me any good solution… So, not wanting to miss out on the price I got, and knowing that Woodcraft has a brick and mortar store here in Nevada (albeit it’s an 8 hour drive), I started thinking…. I called a local vendor here in Vegas to see if they could match the pricing… First I spoke with a customer care re...

Baby Furniture #5: Setbacks/lessons learned/question

140 days ago by Kevin | 4 comments »

Well, I must say this has been a learning experience. Unfortunately I had to make a mistake to learn from it. From now on I will never attempt a project without having the hardware ahead of time. Not a big deal sometimes, but on a crib, it turned out to be a big deal. I designed my crib myself, and halfway through building it, decided to change hardware types. Of course, the legs were already cut for the original idea. Last night I started planning down some more Walnut to make two new ...
