What makes a good mallet?

People post blogs and projects about mallets. I don’t have one but I’d like to make one. Do I want one small and knimble (Brass etc about 1 1.5lbs) or a 3 – 5 lb clunker. It seems that the one’s I’ve seen shown here are either square with a sloped face and a handle or a round one with an oval shape. I currently use a blaock of Osage Orange that is a cutoff from a gavel that I made. It’s about 3” long and 3” across (round) and no handle....

What kind of tree is this?

I do not know if this is the place to post this, I hope it is. I have a question regarding this tree. It was in the medium of a four lane road in southern California (Knotts Berry farm/ Disneyland) placed along with palm trees. I have driven down this particular road a zillion times but just now noticed it. The palm trees overwhelm it. For the rest of my stay down there i never saw another one. So my question is What kind of tree is this? Does anyone know? Those spike things are hard. It is...
