Stickley / Jeff Jewitt Arts and Crafts Finish

65 days ago by pintodeluxe | 13 comments »

I wanted to recreate this Jeff Jewitt finish from Fine Woodworking #157, however the article didn’t list which formula was used. I consulted with Jeff, and it was Transtint Brown Mohogany dye, followed by McCloskeys Walnut stain. McClosky no longer makes stain, but sold to Valspar / Cabot. ---So I set out to make a sample board to achieve the rich, dark color I was after. ---The top colors are stain only, the middle colors are dye first then stain, and the bottom color is dye only. ...

Arts and Crafts 6 Drawer Dresser #1: Legs and Side Panel Glueups

190 days ago by pintodeluxe | 4 comments »

I started the dresser like I start most of my projects, by laminating up some legs. I am making two dressers, so 8 legs were in order. I cut strips of 3/4” quartersawn red oak, and resawed a few of them. I could then glue 3 pieces together to get my leg width. Finally, I glued on 1/4” thick stock to cover my jointlines. After the glue dries, I plane the thickness of these veneers to about 3/32”. That way, I get quartersawn grain on all 4 sides. I then milled s...

Arts and Crafts Entertainment Center / Sideboard #1: Side Panels

113 days ago by pintodeluxe | 8 comments »

Here is the next project, an entertainment center that is reminiscent of a Stickley sideboard. The central slat detail gives a nod to Kevin Rodel. The backsplash features my “wedge and strap” detail, also found on my A&C dressers. ----- Leg blanks are laminated from 3/4” stock. Next I add 1/4” thick veneers on two sides. Even though the finished veneers will only be 3/32” thick, I leave them 1/4” thick for now. I find that 1/4” stri...

Twin Tenon Arts and Crafts Dining Table #1: Frame components and tabletop

301 days ago by pintodeluxe | 2 comments »

I wanted to design an arts and crafts dining table that included arched rails and twin keyed tenons. I like several of the Stickley tables, but wanted something original. I like the feel of Keven Rodel’s Talesien desk, which served as inspiration for this table. The stack of parts is growing… Initial frame assembly… And the tabletop glueup…

Twin Tenon Arts and Crafts Dining Table #6: Finishing Touches

281 days ago by pintodeluxe | 9 comments »

Top finished Frame assembled Four-inch long T30 lags secure the top timbers. Laminated or not? By laying out my jointlines carefully, I was able to laminate some 8/4 and 5/4 together. The glueline is at the angle of the timber, so it is not visible. In addition, I laminated some thin veneers on both sides. Back to the project page… http://lumberjocks.com/projects/71281

Video Journey - Oak Dovetailed Blanket Chest

2060 days ago by John Nixon | 13 comments »

I recently finished a dovetailed blanket chest as a wedding gift for my good friend. I think it came out pretty nice. I was able to get it into his house while he was away on his honeymoon. He and his new bride really loved it! It’s a great feeling knowing that they will have this gift and cherish it forever. I made a video about the entire process. Here’s a link to the video. Check it out, and leave a comment telling me what you think:http://www.eaglelakewoodworking.com/post...

Arts and Crafts Style Panel Bed #1: Panels, Rails & Stiles for the Frame and Panel Construction

1476 days ago by John Nixon | 8 comments »

I’m working on building an Arts and Crafts style Panel bed. The bed is inspired by the Stickley Bed pictured below. There’s three videos in the series so far, and I hope to have more out soon. The quartersawn white oak grain on this wood I have looks really good in person, and I’m excited to see the bed come together. For measured drawings and in-process pictures, you can visit the project page at Eagle Lake Woodworking:http://www.eaglelakewoodworking.com/post/Arts-and...

Arts and Crafts 6 Drawer Dresser #7: Clamshell Biscuits, And Building a Flat Top Panel

163 days ago by pintodeluxe | 3 comments »

Here is the plan from my design. It incorporates some Stickley design elements. --The dresser carcases are assembled, including the small divider that separates the top two drawers.--The small dividers are attached with biscuits. To cut the slots, I opened the top two web frames like a clamshell. The web frames were aligned, and clamped together. Then I added an Emerson straightedge clamp, positioned to center the small divider on the web frame. --The ruler on the Emerson clamp helps cen...

Arts and Crafts 6 Drawer Dresser #11: Waxing Dressers and adding Drawer Pulls

135 days ago by pintodeluxe | 8 comments »

I waxed the dressers with Howards Walnut wax and #0000 steel wool. I tested the difference between sanding with a 1500 grit sanding sponge, and waxing with steel wool – and I prefered the latter. I waxed with the grain, and let the wax dry. Then I buffed it off with a clean lint-free rag. ----- For drawer pull layout I used Scott Collins no-math layout method. My drawer pulls have 2 bolts, 3” on center. -----I made a full-height jig to drill the holes for the machine bo...

Charles Rohlfs Oak Desk, Stickley Ellis Table & Iconic Crafts, Nelson Atkins Art Gallery Kansas City

415 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 23 comments »

Wow! I made it, I finally made it, and oh what a surprise to find a museum with Iconic Furniture pieces intermixed with a lot of European, Asian, Native American, Egyptian, and some strange Contemporary Stuff that someone else calls “art”. ————————- WARNING: If you are easily offended by my silly notions of what looks good and is well built, please don’t read any farther. I’m just giving my opinions, that is what ...
