Well I finally finished the Tablesaw Base, trying to film during rain storms is almost impossible with the ambient noise from the rain hitting the metal roof.. but I waited it out, and am very happy with the outcome.. Here is a look at the final steps of building this base

The Impossible #4: One of these days (I'm going to cut you into little pieces)

06-14-2010 07:20 PM by BritBoxmaker | 34 comments »

Not a threat. A lyric from an early Pink Floyd album. But I am going to do it, to the blanks. There’s some trig. in this part of the blog. If you don’t know Trigonometry youll just have to trust me. First this is what came out of the glue-up. Now I’d pre thicknessed both the Sycamore and the purpleheart on the side which will be triangle shaped before gluing up so all I have to do now is thickness the other side, to 4mm. I do this by trimming the end off in the table ...

Building my first guitar #1: Finished the body blank, got all the parts.

09-22-2012 03:15 PM by daverose | 2 comments »

Was inspired by the Randall Price series on building a tenor acoustic guitar and figured my wood working skills had reached the point where I could attempt a guitar, albeit an electric one. I’m slightly obsessive about using recycled wood whenever I can and am often going through people’s old furniture where I have salvaged some quite nice wood over the years. This time around a friend was throwing out an old beat up kitchen table while I was helping her move house. It seemed...

Patchwork Table #2: Afghan Carpet Inspired

07-11-2011 03:37 PM by Elwood89 | 3 comments »

I liked the first patchwork coffee table that I made so much that I’m making another one. With improvements of course. Start with a lot of different exotic woods. Thanks to www.exoticwoodsusa.com I started with 2” thick blocks of wood and resawed them to 1” (so I have enough left over to make another table). Make them look pretty (easy to do with this wood). This table was inspired in part by a carpet that I got in Afghanistan a few years ago… The ta...

End grain cutting boards #1: End grain cutting boards

05-26-2010 03:31 PM by emetric | 6 comments »

Ok so I have heard a lot of people talk about making end grain cutting boards, and most of them have horror stories relating to disastrous results from running them through a planer. I myself have made no less than 14-15 end grain cutting boards and I ran every single one through my Delta portable thickness planer with very little issue. Of course the last edge that comes out will be “flaking” off but that could be solved by adding an extra piece of sacrificial stock during the ...

Question on sanding & finishing Purpleheart wood

12-31-2009 12:22 AM by buckeyedudes | 6 comments »

Ladies and Gentlemen, Does anyone have tips on maintaining the beautiful purple color of the purpleheart wood after sanding and then finishing? It seems that when I begin the sanding, the purple color fades into a washed out flat reddish color. Also, what is the best way to finish purpleheart and enhance the purple coloration? Thanks much – Perplexed Jeff in Ohio
