A Rustic New England End Table Explained By Derek Skapars Expert Author Derek Skapars No matter where you live, or what you do for a living, each and every one of our lives includes furniture. We sit behind a desk, eat dinner at the kitchen table, and empty the contents of our pockets in the night stand draw at the end of the day before we climb into bed. There are numerous variations and many different styles of furniture. My focus is rustic furniture and through examining t...

a woodworker's story

220 days ago by rusticderek | 3 comments »

Today at the age of 32, I am a well-established furniture maker, small business owner, and woodworking instructor. At the age of 7 my Father John Skapars introduced me to the fine art of woodworking. I can remember helping him install our homes living room floor in the suburban Boston, Massachusetts town of Dover. An interest was sparked, and a true passion was discovered. Being an excellent student, knowing what I want, and not being afraid of failure all contribute to my current suc...

I have over the past few weeks been able to start taking some overstock merchandise, merchandise that the customer either forgot about or didn’ t have the funds to pay after the customer used the companies sharpening service. Some of the blades, router bits and some shaper bits , I will be keeping for my self but, to be albe to buy more I have to sale items I don’t normally use or if there is way more of an item or group of items than I can use myself. Howdy! The build is done so I figure I have 8 days of sanding and finishing left to do. The dark wood running down the legs and across the stretchers is African Mahogany. I’ll start building the final table of the set some time this week! Yee Ha…...

Southwest end tables #3: Grumble

355 days ago by MarkTheFiddler | 6 comments »

Some lessons are learned the hard way. I bought a warped piece of Sapelle. I mean really warped. I thought that the little tiny pieces I needed would not be affected by a warped piece. Good lord was I ever wrong! Here’s the sorrier news. I didn’t ask the store for a price break. I just said with a real confident aire “No problem at all! It will work just fine!” Every single gap in the top of the table was due to the fact that I could not make precise cuts to the sev...

Southwest end tables #2: I am soooo done planning.

362 days ago by MarkTheFiddler | 3 comments »

Yup – I couldn’t wait. I took that little bit of purple heart and Peruvian walnut and chopped it into little tiny pieces. The center is glued. I was dry fitting the outside border. Thought I would snap a work in progress picture. I didn’t get to do much lumber-jocking this week but I did repair the dryer, sliding glass door tack and van. I’ll take my little bit of progress and be thankful. I think I’ll be able to do a little good this weekend but my woo...

Southwest Cocktail table #7: Table Built - on to the the finish ........ line.

382 days ago by MarkTheFiddler | 15 comments »

Had a bit more time this morning and late afternoon. I finished up building the legs then got them attached. Lot’s of cleanup work is required but the rest of my time will be spent making it just so. I decided to make the inside legs into triangles. It’s a lot less work, and as I understand it, sturdier. I go a little cleanup done of the top. I’m chomping at the bit to do some more work. Id be surprised if I could get her ready for finish in ano...
