Four-Poster Captain's Bed #2: How this got started...

09-16-2015 06:59 AM by RobII | 0 comments »

How this promise of a captain’s bed came about was almost an accident. My bride-to-be is used to having a large bed, California King, to be exact. All I had was a paltry queen-sized mattress on a relatively low frame. She commented that I probably stuck out over both ends when I slept (I’m 6’ 4”), and I had to agree with her. She also did not (understandably) want to share a bed with me that I had shared with my last (deceased) wife. So, I went and bought a Cal-Ki...

new coffee table

07-06-2015 10:32 PM by emart | 0 comments »

I didnt bother posting this in my project list because its mostly metal but i figured people might like to see it anyways. This is made from some reclaimed purple heart chunks I bought from the salvage shop for $5 each. If I could afford it I’d have bought their entire stock. They were pretty rough to start with but they turned out decent in the end. Anyways here’s pictures.

Wood Gloat #18: Who painted the timber purple...

05-10-2012 06:33 AM by degoose | 16 comments »

Purple heart…I still get people wanting to know how I get timber this colour….do I paint it..or is it a stain? Those of you who have used purple heart know that it is naturally purple…but when you dress or sand it… it goes brown… If as most of you know you leave it in the sun or UV light in the workshop… hey presto… back to purple… This piece was partially covered to prevent the whole board from turning Purple. Here are a few sho...

Glue up problem - In an end grain cutting board, swelling of one species busting glue up

04-27-2012 02:25 AM by Kevin May | 6 comments »

I have an end grain cutting board made of purple heart and yellow heart. The blocks are squares, 1-1/8” square, about 1-1/2” long/thick, glued up with mixed patterns (making letters). The board was treated with mineral oil. It appears that the yellow heart pieces have swollen from absorbing the mineral oil, and have busting some of the glue joints. Has anyone ever experienced this type of problem? Thanks for reading and your comments. Kevin

Building an Acoustic Guitar #2: The Neck, Shaping the Heel

02-13-2012 12:33 PM by Patrick Jaromin | 7 comments »

My lovely wife spent her weekend watching the kids and provided me with nearly two full days of shop time. In the intervening days I’d decided I wanted to build one of the guitars from cherry. I have a rather large stockpile and had read somewhere that Martin made/makes a “sustainable” series out of cherry, so it can’t be all that bad an idea, right? I’ll just set aside one of the two maple blanks for later and replace it with a new cherry one. Another imp...

12-08-2011 04:02 AM by degoose | 12 comments »

In my last post In the round the second pic shows a single stripe .. double chevron [second gen] ..This blog will show in part how this was done… To start make two grooves on both faces of a board… in this case virgin hoop pine…[virgin meaning naturally grown… not plantation timber] Inlay two different timbers… in this case purple heart And narra [new guinea rosewood]This is instead of one strip of timber between two others…Shown end on… I...

If you knew Sushi.... #2: A blank and two bowls...

07-23-2011 10:44 AM by degoose | 10 comments »

Here is the blank of maple and purple heart… remember this is Queensland Maple and not the maple you get maple syrup from… I have two dipping bowls and I am not sure which one will be right for the Sushi Board… Number one is square sided and deeper… Number two is divided into two sections and has rounded corners but is shallow.. I intend to curve the ends and using dowels attach the curved handles … maybe purple heart… What do you think?

If you knew Sushi.... #1: Initial thoughts.

07-22-2011 10:54 AM by degoose | 5 comments »

Have been thinking for some time to try my hand at a sushi board.. was in town today and picked up some small dishes… suitable for dipping sauce… so I have laminated a strip of Purple Heart between some boards of Queensland Maple…[ not a true maple… it is a flindersia not an acer] Any way waiting for the glue to dry again… No pics yet.. so stay tuned..
