Call For Wider Adoption Of Project Card Widgets

593 days ago by Martin Sojka | 22 comments »

To be honest, I really believed that our latest cool feature – Project Card Widgets – would get wider adoption. This is one of a kind feature of the LumberJocks that you simply cannot find on other woodworking sites or forums. It’s possible here because the projects are the core of this site and community. To stress the power of these widgets again, let me present it on the top projects from the latest Awards edition: ———————&#...

To dream a dream

602 days ago by bayspt | 18 comments »

Brand new to the wonderful world of wood working (well almost), and thirsting for knowledge, I turned to my old, not so faithful friend, the World Wide Web. I went looking for how to videos (for free of course) and stumbled upon The Wood Whisperer. After watching every episode (most of which where way beyond my level but still easy to understand) I heard mention many times of LumberJocks.com, so I decided to check it out. After spending a down day in Sao Paulo, Brazil (on business mind you...

The Router Table Saga #1: The setup

609 days ago by Mark Shymanski | 6 comments »

I’m finally setting up a shop in the east half of our two-car garage. I’ve got some rudimentary tools and even more rudimentary skills and a whole lot of enthusiasm and a very understanding Wife, so I bought a router to add to the 20+ year old fixed base B+D router I have. (I will have to write a review of the Triton 2 1/4 horse router when I’ve put it through its paces). Working on our dining room table a chair set that a buddy of mine was making for us I asked him abo...

My first as you go project for your review

748 days ago by Betsy | 2 comments »

Ok – so I said that I was going to pick a project from one of my favorite books and then post my progress on line. So here we go. I’ve chosen as my first project a box from Doug Stowe’s book – Basic Box Making – A sliding top Pencil box. The first thing I decided about this project was that I wanted to cut the fingers on the router and not the table saw. The reasoning for this is that the two ends are very short and to hold the end against the fence I would eithe...

Project based learning

750 days ago by Betsy | 11 comments »

So I’ve been doing a lot of “twiddling” in the woodshop lately and have realized I’m not really getting very far. I make a lot of the same things over and over because I’ve gotten good at them. And that’s ok. But I did not get into the hobby of woodworking to make one or two things really well. I got into it to be creative and have fun, etc. Lately, I’ve been honing my hand tool skills by practicing chopping dovetails, dados, planing, sharpening, e...

Project - Chunky Boxes #1: Milling the Lumber

763 days ago by Dekker | 4 comments »

While my other boxes are receiving their final finishes, I have decided to start on another pair of boxes. The design is based on something I saw in a book, but I can not remember which at this moment. They are short (probably only 1-1/4” tall) and not very long (about 3-1/2”) with a slab lid that is removed with the use of a finger-hole on the side wall of the carcase. The nice thing about the design is its frugality: It only takes one piece of wood 17” long and 1-1/4...

Project - Lever-Action Boxes #1: Committing Myself

772 days ago by Dekker | 3 comments »

Well, I’ve finally gone and done it. After blogging about books on boxes , I got the itch to make some boxes! I haven’t delved extensively into boxes, and it has been ages, so it’s like starting new again. My wife makes jewellery that she sells online and at craft shows. She has a show sometime in late October, and another in early November, and I thought it would be a great idea to offer some jewellery boxes next to the jewellery. I therefore have a motivational deadline...

Iroko & Sycamore Table

787 days ago by ByronBlack | 12 comments »

Hi all. I wanted to introduce myself and present all you fellow ‘jocks with my current project. It’s a little design I’ve had whirling around my head for some time. It’s an Arts & Crafts inspired small table to go next to the sofa and hold ‘her in doors’ cup of tea whilest watching TV of an evening. Here’s a shot of a dry fit and unfinished top: I’m currently in the middle of a glue up of the leg assemblies, and a mitred frame to s...
