My Journey As A Scroll Saw Pattern Designer #3: To submit or not to submit

1078 days ago by Sheila Landry (scrollgirl) | 5 comments »

It certainly is a beautiful morning here in Nova Scotia. The sun is shining and everything is quiet except the sound of the birds in the distance. The past several days have started out foggy and overcast, as many do being so close to the ocean. Usually by mid-morning things clear up and the sun burns off the fog. The ocean stays pretty cold in these parts. I have only actually went for a swim in the ocean once in my six years of being here (if you could call it that – I got as far...

Making your own parting tool

1096 days ago by David Craig | 12 comments »

Been awhile since I have had any quality time in the shop, so I decided to invest some vacation time and I will be taking a week off next week, with the emphasis being on shop time. So I have been getting my ducks in a row so I can have a somewhat productive week. Last week involved a little wood gathering (that deserves a whole ‘nother post…), I have my sharpening system and chisels arriving today, and I have been scouring books and mags to try to come up with some projects. Sinc...

Plans or No Plans?

1103 days ago by HighRockWoodworking | 8 comments »

Last month I posted an article titled Old School V. New School, I have received lots of great comments and emails from this article and really enjoyed writing it as it made me think a lot about my grandfather and father. One of the last comments mentioned the difference between computer designed furniture and cabinets as compared to woodworker designed. This is a subject that I have been interested in for some time. As a project manager for a national multi-family builder I built on a ve...

Bandsaw Restoration #3: Quick Update

1128 days ago by Jimi_C | 4 comments »

Progress is continuing on the restoration, I’m grabbing an hour here or there to work on it. The bottom axle was pretty easy to remove after all – a block of wood and a rubber mallet got it out ok. The only stubborn part was the woodruff key on the end of the axle that (of course) had to be removed for the axle to come out. I had to mangle it a little to get it out, but I think it will be ok. If not, I’ll just order a new one from McMaster-Carr. That one damn bearin...

You can never....

1132 days ago by Troy | 5 comments »

…have enough clamps. Every woodworker in the world knows this.   Previous collection I certainly don’t have enough; not even close.   The Problem Recently, in an attempt to speed up production in the shop, I’ve noticed the lack of clamps was slowing me down significantly. Even though I was initially adverse to working on more than one project at a time, it’s quickly became necessary. More clamps So this morning, after a nice relaxing b...

Drafting Desk #1: Drafting Desk part 2

1138 days ago by HighRockWoodworking | 0 comments »

Last week I talked about the drafting desk that I am currently working on. I have made a lot of progress and now have all of the parts made and partially put together. Over the weekend my wife and I went up to North Carolina to spend Easter with our families. I took the opportunity to work in my fathers shop a little. If any of you read my blog “Old School v. New School” I spoke about how I grew up working in his shop but now have adapted my style around the space I have available at home...

Shoe Rack #3: Time's Up

1211 days ago by David Craig | 8 comments »

Well, I got to spend a couple more hours on the shoe rack, but that is all the time allotted to me. It is gone and I can’t do any more work on it. My friend was in closet cleaning mode again and she needed it now :) Ok, so I was not able to paint it, I am hoping she will get around to it at a later date. So I will just give you the highlights of what I was able to do. Last update I gave, the carcass looked like this… Today, i was able to finish cutting the cove moldin...

Twin-Sized Bed With Pull-Out Desk, Closet, and Dresser #1: What went on before...

1212 days ago by gbarteck | 8 comments »

My family is just too big… Either that or my house is too small. We have four children at home. Two are college age, and two are in their early teens. Thye two youngest ones share a bedroom…nothing uncommon about that. However, they definitely do not want to use bunk beds. As you might imagine, this can lead to floor space issues. This is especially true when you consider that they really can’t share a single dresser, and they both have school work that needs doin...

Making a Game for $5.00 #3: Prepping the Tiles

1245 days ago by Deela40 | 3 comments »

Last night I worked on getting the tiles cut up and prepped for painting the numbers. I decided to go with 12 tiles as opposed to 10. I wouldn’t have enough room to put the numbers on 10-12 if I made all the tiles the same size as they would bee to small to get two numbers on. I remedied this by making two different sizes. I made nine tiles sized (7/8 inch) for numbers 1-9 and three (1 9/16 inches) for numbers 10-12. After I finished all the measurements, I used my miter saw to make ...
