Hey, I hope you will enjoy a brand new update of our project pages. When entering a project page you will immediately see a larger version of the main picture. And the best thing is that this larger picture is not cropped anymore. Also, there is a list of all project pictures in a thumbnail format. Just click on any of the thumbnails to view enlarged version of that picture:
Zoom Pictures button opens a slideshow view of the high-resolution project pictures.
In addition to this upda...

This blog entry today is somewhat woodworking related, and the content has mostly been provided by my daughter Rachel, a student of woodworking, at least in the way I do woodworking.
She’s been hanging out in the shop all afternoon since the grade school decided to call off school today because the Cottonwood River was up so high, cutting off roads around the County today. I’m enjoying her presence in the shop, but I hope the water is down tomorrow so she can learn something w...

To be honest, I really believed that our latest cool feature – Project Card Widgets – would get wider adoption. This is one of a kind feature of the LumberJocks that you simply cannot find on other woodworking sites or forums. It’s possible here because the projects are the core of this site and community.
To stress the power of these widgets again, let me present it on the top projects from the latest Awards edition:

Hi All, Just though I would post some pics of a bandsaw mill my dad and I built out of scrap parts from the junkyard and a few yardsale tires. There was a lot of trial and error and disigning ideas until we settled on this one and it is always a work in progress, but I think we are close as we are getting great results. The motor is a HF 12 or 13 horse (the biggest expendature) and we also use their trailer winch for raising and lowering as well as pullies. The mill...

I was thinking whether or not to make this a continuation of the veneering bog, however many items here have more to do with vacuum systems, than veneering.
Hence a new Blog!
Photo one is a Demilune Hall Table top jig.
Photo two is a 30 inch long tee square which we use for biscuiting and routing duties. We make marks on the blue tape, were the biscuits go. When were done we replace the tape.
Photo three is an 8” square that we use to biscuit cabinet sides on.
P...

Brand new to the wonderful world of wood working (well almost), and thirsting for knowledge, I turned to my old, not so faithful friend, the World Wide Web. I went looking for how to videos (for free of course) and stumbled upon The Wood Whisperer. After watching every episode (most of which where way beyond my level but still easy to understand) I heard mention many times of LumberJocks.com, so I decided to check it out. After spending a down day in Sao Paulo, Brazil (on business mind you...

I am in the process making a couple large teardrop shaped supports for a table, but know absolutely nothing about coopering and the two supports are rather large. Is there an expert among the Lumberjocks that could give me some pointers or ideas where to hunt for information that would be of help to a begginer. That’s the reason I’m asking here rather than a blind search on line. I could search for days and get no where. I have a basic understanding of what coopering is and unders...

There’s an article, by the well-known Christopher Schwarz, that tells how to make a workbench for about $175.00.
I like that idea ;-)
He raves about SYP, but … not much of that in my neighborhood, so …. I went with the dimensional Doug Fir, from the Depot.
I’m working on the base, right now, but … here’s the top … before being trimmed to length:
Got his recommended vise, bench dogs, and Wonder Dog, from Lee Valley. The top will dress ...

so After setting on the last design (see previous post in this series) I went out to disassemble the bowling alley laminated top – the purpose was to remove all the nails, so that I can drill the dog holes, and also laminate it in a double stack to give me a 4” top on the perimeter (5” in from the edges – for clamping purposes, and leg attachments).
This idea turned to be disastrous. The nails are hardened steel, and twisted making the job of pulling them outridicul...
