My Journey As A Scroll Saw Pattern Designer #513: I'm Really Getting Excited About This Next Project!

567 days ago by Sheila Landry (scrollgirl) | 4 comments »

Although I made great strides yesterday, I am still not quite at the finish line. Sometimes things are just like that. While I anticipated that I would be done with drawing this new set of ornaments yesterday, I just finished up the sixth piece last night and I was tired and had to quit for the evening. It was about 9:30 and I had worked on them most of the afternoon and my eyes just couldn’t take any more. I started my day early yesterday (the usual 5am) and I did accomplish qu...

Finally building up my own shop! #3: Almost finished the assemble on the workbench!

380 days ago by oweno | 2 comments »

Many lessons learned the hard way in building this. I broke several lag screws due to too small pilot holes. Also, not having a drill press (or good hand drill skills) is severely hurting my ability to accurately line up the nuts and bolts joinery. One of the top stretcher boards ended up almost 1/4” proud. Good thing I just tuned up my fore plane cause it got a workout (shavings on the floor.) All that’s left is dog holes, clean up the top and fasten it to the leg constructio...

My Journey As A Scroll Saw Pattern Designer #809: Too Many Choices

261 days ago by Sheila Landry (scrollgirl) | 5 comments »

I had a good and productive day yesterday. While I had hoped to finish drawing and begin cutting, I didn’t really get that far. But that is OK. Sometimes things happen for good reasons and I believe that was one of those times. I have been having trouble lately progressing with some of the new ideas that I have had lately. By the term ‘trouble’ I mean that I haven’t moved ahead as quickly as I want to on them. This isn’t because I don’t have enough ...

the stairway #6: forgotten piece

243 days ago by Monte Pittman | 5 comments »

As I was close to finishing up cutting, they called and said contractor “forgot” a piece on the list. It was only the biggest piece he needed. A 16-1/2 foot 8×8. That’s how I spent my Sunday. I had to make new slabbing rails because the ones I have wouldn’t go that long. Got it cut and delivered. 88 board feet by itself. Up to about 840 board feet delivered. A couple hundred to go. This will get a lot easier in the future. I am in the process of buying a bandsa...

My 2008 "Not Just Any Box" Winter Awards #8: The Box is done, BUT!!

1946 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 6 comments »

I completed the box yesterday, but I’ve been struggling to get my camera to work. All of the light areas of an image have a pink tinge, & I can’t edit the pink out. I even tried taking pictures outside, but it was even worse. Here’s an out door picture, Blah!! Maybe someone has a cure for this disease. HELP!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~In the meantime I’d like to tell about my recent discovery. Barb has mult...

Easter Eggs

1903 days ago by rikkor | 15 comments »

I made a bottle stopper out of Tulipwood. My wife liked it and suggested I make some Easter eggs for our two nephews who are also God-children. Never to turn down an authorized trip to the shop, I agreed. First was to get some Tulipwood and cut roughly to length. Then I chucked it up… ...turned a tenon… ...reversed it… ...roughed the egg shape… ...turned off the end… ...and asked The Boss if the egg in an “egg cup” was acceptable....

Treadle Lathe workbench #3: constructing the frame from my reclaimed wood........

1516 days ago by jth2bmtsu | 1 comment »

I really prefer to build from reclaimed wood. Unfortunately, I chickened out from building the flywheel with it because of my limited access to tools. I probably would need a router and joiner which I fail to own at this time. That is one reason that I plan to paint the wheel since it will be built of new pine and not multi century old pine. Here is a peek at my reclaimed stock. Thanks to my uncle for the supply. I picked a few nice size planks and went to work on the lathe frame.Well t...

My Journey As A Scroll Saw Pattern Designer #133: Enjoying the Small Successes

954 days ago by Sheila Landry (scrollgirl) | 8 comments »

The light has just started to appear to the east but for the most part it is still dark out. My neighbor, who leaves for work every day at this time has started his truck up and it is warming up in the driveway. Over the sound of the engine, I hear a faint intermittent scraping noise. I looked out the window in the semi-darkness to see if I could distinguish the source. It was the windshield wipers on the truck, which was covered in a thin layer of frost. Wasn’t it just a few weeks ...
