Bandsawn Box #1 #2: My First Bandsawn Box

258 days ago by Karson | 14 comments »

Well I started getting the wood ready. and I now needed to cut the core out of the center section. The core then had the bottom cut off and i cut off two quarter sections from the top leaving a small piece in the middle. I then cut the core out of the middle section. From the top of the second core I cut a small piece off that was then glued back into the piece it was cut from originally. The top section of the handle and the bottom was glued on. And so now ...

New Woodshop Construction #1: Setting Up Shop II, or How I Spent My Winter Vacation

265 days ago by Patrick Jaromin | 21 comments »

(This is the first post here, but a continuation of a series started at my personal blog at tenonandspline.com/blog) I’m not what you would call a “neat freak.” However, I do try to keep things generally organized and find it near impossible to work in a cluttered shop. Not only do I find it technically difficult to work in an unorganized mess – I find it hopelessly depressing as well. Consequently, when the shop is cluttered I will typically avoid doing any woodwor...

Wood Scrap Box #1: Parts and Pieces

269 days ago by CutNRun | 4 comments »

Two days before Christmas, my wife casually mentions that she would like a jewelry box. Hmmm, don’t think the timing was very good. Having completed the 2×4 project, I decided to try to put together a jewelry box from the small pieces of wood laying around in my shop. I had a decent amount of 1/2” cherry, some figured maple, some oak, and a small amount of paduk. After spending a few days laying out a design and seeing if I had enough wood, I started cutting and gluing.Th...

My Keeping Chest with Charles Neil

275 days ago by mikega | 10 comments »

In my last blog I mentioned that I was working on a Keeping Chest that I started back in October when I was in New Market for a class with Charles Neil. This is one of the 3 projects that we worked on that weekend (checkout the You-Tube video called 36 Hours with Charles to see the other projects I started). Well I got my chest done on Christmas day. The Saturday before Christmas I got an early Christmas present when I found my 7 disks DVD set called “The Adventures for Bob and Charl...

The chair (design) that will not go away

276 days ago by FritzM | 26 comments »

I have been struggling with the final arm rest/leg design of a redwood patio chair, so I thought I would document the process and the progress thus far and as it moves forward (at a snails pace). First off, when I originally sketched this chair I fell in love. I couldn’t wait to get into the shop and get started. The need was for a set of deck chairs but i really wanted to avoid a straight Adirondack design. I was trying to get a comfortable contemporary look with both a minimal ...

Bandsawn Box #1 #1: Getting the wood ready

284 days ago by Karson | 21 comments »

Well I went to the attic, actually surface area of the wood rack in the workshop and picked up a Bigleaf Maple Burl piece that I bought about 5 years ago on eBay. It came from the Pacific Northwest of the USA. The piece had been water blasted to remove all of the bark off the outer edge of the burl and that leaves the spikes that are seen here. The block had been dipped in wax to minimize the drying of it. I then went to the jointer (spiral Carbide blades) and cleaned up the edges. ...

Greene inspired Night Stand #1: Time to start the execution phase

293 days ago by ChicoWoodnut | 6 comments »

Well I think I am finally done with the design of this peice. I made a change last night which is actually a regression to an earlier model. I like this change. I have reversed the rails and stiles on the door construction making the stiles be the horizontal member. I read an entry on this site the other day regarding this technique. Sorry I can’t remember who to credit it to. Anyway, Here are two jpeg exports to compare. I think the new arrangement gives the table a low and wide...

Norms Router Cabinet #6: Woohoo the Router Cabinet base is done

7 days ago by sIKE | 4 comments »

Well I got out late this afternoon and put a couple of hours into the base cabinet an got it completed. I still need to do a bit more adjusting the drawer slides. I am also one knob short on my drawers gonna have to make a run to Ikea and get me another pack of knobs. Next up is the top and fence. I am leaning real heavy towards a phenolic plywood top if I can’t get the crown out of the butcher block top I picked up at Ikea for $10. I gotta see how that goes. It is gonna be a bit...

the box #4: the end

34 days ago by kolwdwrkr | 13 comments »

So the inlays are in, and the box is finished. I won’t get into detail about anything. I don’t think there was a huge interest in the narative so I won’t continue the story. I thought it would be cool to drag it along, describe the step by step and take the reader through the same journey I went through. In the end it’s just a box. Thanks for looking. I hope everyone enjoyed. Have a happy day ;-)

Grand Daughters Crib #1: Shaping the legs

35 days ago by Les Hastings | 9 comments »

My first Grand Daughter will be here sometime in November. My Daughter requested this that I build this Walnut Sleigh crib. So let’s get this show on the road. I’ve been saving this piece of walnut for a couple of years now or so, its 2 1/4×15” x 98”. I’ll be using it for the legs. After I finally got a pattern drawn that I was happy with and one that I could fit four legs on my one chunk of walnut, I’m ready to start milling. I milled the wanut dow...
