Small Painter's Cabinet #4: Cutting the sides to proper dimension

166 days ago by Stephen Fields | 4 comments »

Like I said earlier, I accidentally set up the table saw with a dado blade before I realized that I had neglected to cut the sides to length. Since the template I am using is based on the dadoes being the correct length, I had to remove the dado stack and put in the normal blade. When I perform cross cuts, I use a sled. This is particularly important when I need to cut many pieces to the same length. Here is a picture of the first side sitting on my cross cut sled. (Note: This is version 2...

Lift Coffee Table #4: Looking for finish suggestion

167 days ago by Greg Wurst | 6 comments »

My curly cherry arrive today. Again, I can’t recommend the good people at http://www.kencraftcompany.com enough. I asked for a little extra to try some finish work on and they threw some in at no charge. Anyway, the initial though was to go with a dark finish on the inserts to contrast the lighter oak. The cherry is so pretty I’m not sure I don’t go with a lighter finish to highlight the figure. Having not worked with any figured wood before, I’m looking for sugge...

Sewing Table #6: Stupid Stuff and Serendipitous Solutions

168 days ago by Blake | 23 comments »

When I left off I was ready to glue up the apron and legs. So in my excitement to see it take shape, I did a little last minute trimming of the tenons and one more dry fit, and then started assembling it with glue in sections. Here’s the front: And the back: Then I dry fit the two sections together with the side aprons for the final glue up: Which is when it occurred to me… was something missing? THE DRAWERS!!! I forgot to cut the drawers out of ...

Lift Coffee Table #3: Holding pattern

168 days ago by Greg Wurst | 3 comments »

I’m basically waiting now for some 1/4” curly cherry panels to arrive, so I’m doing what I can at this point. The top is separate so I figured I’d go ahead and get it together and finished. Here you can see the edging glued to the plywood lid. I attached it with biscuits so as not to show any pocket hole screws underneath. Here is the completed and finished lid. I applied a dyed de-waxed shellac and then coated it with three coats of water-based polyuretha...

A new shop in the making #10: I am living in interesting times! -the roof appears but...

170 days ago by Bob #2 | 12 comments »

I was told that building something from plans or sketches was a lot different once the job hit the ground and they were 120% right.I have had the usual setbacks with material gone south and at this point the structural beam I had engineered by the truss manufacturer came in too light . My framer intervened for me as I have no clue what the spec should have been and the result is that they are replacing the beam for me but it is a real pain now as the sheeting is on and the best we can do now ...

Sewing Table #5: Tapers and Curves

172 days ago by Blake | 15 comments »

Yesterday I cut the curves in the apron and the tapers in the legs. I just bent a stick between two blocks for the long curve and marked it: I used a bowed stick with a string to mark the smaller arc: I made the cuts on the bandsaw and left a hair extra: Then the curves were trimmed right down to the line on the R.O. sander: In this photo you can barely see the lines I drew for the “recess” drop-down for the sewing machine. Well, this is h...

Lift Coffee Table #2: Progress report

172 days ago by Greg Wurst | 9 comments »

I’ve got most of the pieces cut and I’m starting to put the table together. In the first picture I’ve got the apron attached to the legs with pocket screws. I’ve put the table on the top to mark where the legs meet the top so I can notch the corners. You’ll notice the grain orientation on the aprons is less than ideal. These pieces are hidden, so I used some scrap with the grain running the wrong way. In this second picture I’m attaching the top ...

Sewing Table #4: Mortise and Tenons for my Birthday

173 days ago by Blake | 16 comments »

Time for the Mortise and tenons. First of all, thanks to all who gave me advice about the mortising machine from the last blog. I did hone and tune the chisel and mortise machine and it did cut considerably better. I also turned the chisel so that the open side faces the previously bored section and didn’t have any trouble with chips getting stuck (thanks Betsy!) So I made the layout lines on my legs: And cut the mortises. Notice the stop block for repeatability: I w...

Small Painter's Cabinet #3: Starting on the Sides

174 days ago by Stephen Fields | 6 comments »

Now that the fixed shelves have been roughly milled, I wanted to start on the sides. For five cabinets, I need 10 sides. The dimensions for the sides are 7 5/8×28 1/2. Since I am trying to use up the stock I have on hand I was able to grab eight pieces that fit these specifications and two that were only 7 1/2 wide. I figure that I will make a custom cabinet for this fifth one that will end up 1/8 shorter than the others. My jointer is only 8” wide so I had to rip the boards tha...
