Got back on the project this weekend. The goal was to get the Miter Box assemblies completed. With some inspiration from Scott Bryan, I decided to make a modification to Norms plans. The Miter Box plans call for the box front to be enclosed by plywood. I decided to put drawers in place of the plytwood instead. I had previously completed the build out of the left box and went ahead and completed the right box. This is the first time I got to use my new Jet 90 Degree Miter Clamps which work gre...

I have become intrigued with the various boxes built and demonstrated here on LJsWhen I first looked I thought – I can do that! Nothing was more of and understatement that that silly thought. The precision and engineering on these little marvels far out wieghs the small sizes.
A long story begins in January when I cut up some wood and beveled 45 on the corners only to find that not a single piece fit. Hmmmm? Accuracy and repeatability beyond my current techniques.I have done some seg...

Well I started getting the wood ready. and I now needed to cut the core out of the center section.
The core then had the bottom cut off and i cut off two quarter sections from the top leaving a small piece in the middle.
I then cut the core out of the middle section.
From the top of the second core I cut a small piece off that was then glued back into the piece it was cut from originally.
The top section of the handle and the bottom was glued on.
And so now ...

(This is the first post here, but a continuation of a series started at my personal blog at tenonandspline.com/blog)
I’m not what you would call a “neat freak.” However, I do try to keep things generally organized and find it near impossible to work in a cluttered shop. Not only do I find it technically difficult to work in an unorganized mess – I find it hopelessly depressing as well. Consequently, when the shop is cluttered I will typically avoid doing any woodwor...

Two days before Christmas, my wife casually mentions that she would like a jewelry box. Hmmm, don’t think the timing was very good. Having completed the 2×4 project, I decided to try to put together a jewelry box from the small pieces of wood laying around in my shop. I had a decent amount of 1/2” cherry, some figured maple, some oak, and a small amount of paduk. After spending a few days laying out a design and seeing if I had enough wood, I started cutting and gluing.Th...

In my last blog I mentioned that I was working on a Keeping Chest that I started back in October when I was in New Market for a class with Charles Neil. This is one of the 3 projects that we worked on that weekend (checkout the You-Tube video called 36 Hours with Charles to see the other projects I started). Well I got my chest done on Christmas day. The Saturday before Christmas I got an early Christmas present when I found my 7 disks DVD set called “The Adventures for Bob and Charl...

I have been struggling with the final arm rest/leg design of a redwood patio chair, so I thought I would document the process and the progress thus far and as it moves forward (at a snails pace).
First off, when I originally sketched this chair I fell in love. I couldn’t wait to get into the shop and get started. The need was for a set of deck chairs but i really wanted to avoid a straight Adirondack design. I was trying to get a comfortable contemporary look with both a minimal ...

Well I went to the attic, actually surface area of the wood rack in the workshop and picked up a Bigleaf Maple Burl piece that I bought about 5 years ago on eBay. It came from the Pacific Northwest of the USA.
The piece had been water blasted to remove all of the bark off the outer edge of the burl and that leaves the spikes that are seen here. The block had been dipped in wax to minimize the drying of it.
I then went to the jointer (spiral Carbide blades) and cleaned up the edges.
...

Well I think I am finally done with the design of this peice. I made a change last night which is actually a regression to an earlier model. I like this change. I have reversed the rails and stiles on the door construction making the stiles be the horizontal member. I read an entry on this site the other day regarding this technique. Sorry I can’t remember who to credit it to. Anyway, Here are two jpeg exports to compare. I think the new arrangement gives the table a low and wide...

In part three of this blog I milled out the pieces for the rails and got them glued up to width. Now after they have had plenty time in the clamps we’ll get started cleaning them up. get the glue all scrapped off and ready to sand. I make sanding blocks to the correct radius for the inside and outside of the rails and use 80 grit sticky back snad paper and stick it to the blocks. Below is picture of some finished rails with the sanding blocks that were used to clean them up. I use 80 gr...
