Well i just got a commission for a picture frame from a friend of the families. they want it to be made out of hickory to match their cabinets and they want the design to be the same as that of their cabinets. here is what i came up with on sketchup.
so i just ordered the wood from Goosebay Lumber which i have tried before and i was happy with what i got so i figured that i would go back to them. as always though i treated myself to some other small pieces of wood along with my order. ...

Well here it is the fist video in a long time. This one is just the shop tour since you guys haven’t really seen a good look of what my shop looks like right now. I finally got up the strength to give sketchup a try this week. It has to be one of the most miserable programs I have ever tried to learn. There is too much information, there is too little information and almost every step involves going out somewhere over the internet to gather up the basics.
Suffice it to say that the learning curve, at least for me, is daunting.

Well I’ve finished cutting the rabbets and halflaps for the framework for the table top and for the upper part of the legs. I’m learning a lot about how to increase the accuracy and precision of my joints as I become more familiar with my router. The jig is working really well and I’ve got a lot more confidence in my ability to build accurate jigs. This is a shot of the final leg joint after its cut.

Well I guess Jenn has realized that I now have enough toy..ools and can start building some furniture so we’re starting small with a coffee table. We went to the local Windsor Plywood store (the only real lumber store here in Brandon they actually sell ‘exotic’ wood like maple and not just the dimensioned construction lumber like HD or Rona do) to scope out what wood they have available. Another day off (Wednesday’s) and down to the garage/shop I go. Thought I’d give a progress report. You know that it takes longer then I ever thought to cut, plain, measure, glue and pin 46 slates in place. Might not have taken quite as long if some of them weren’t cut on 45 deg. angles, and almost everything was cut by hand.
But, I enjoyed the time spent. A little closer to the finish line. Next I will sand all the slates with 220 grit and start the drawers. Remember I s...

I have not really been woodworking all that long. I have actually owned a sawmill longer than I have been making any finished wood projects, long story. I have debated making a proper bench for some time. My old/first bench was a row of kitchen cabinets I took out on a remodel I did as a contractor with a solid plank on top. Everyone has different needs, I tried to design mine to fit the work I do. If I need to I can easily make modifications, as is I am calling it “done for now”....

After waiting a while for the finish to cure and a brief hiatus out of town, the Queen Anne Side Table is finally complete. So now its time for the grand finale, a finish that really brings this piece to life. through some test piece and some inspiration (thanks to this woodworker) I began to dye some piece with some general finishes dyes. When i first put the Vintage Cherry Water based Dye Stain on the mahogany i knew i had a winner. It might be hard to see in these pictures but it really brings out the beauty in Mahogany.

So some friends are leaving town permanently for Vancouver and we are getting together this weekend with them and their two boys, one older and the other younger than The Dragon. I’ve had it in mind to make a Dino-Train set so I decided to make a couple of dinos for the boys as going away presents.
Took about three hours to make the two and I’m pretty happy with how they turned out as tests. I’ll do them again and I think they will be better from what I learned ...
