My 2008 "Not Just Any Box" Winter Awards #3: More of My "Not just any box"

685 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 18 comments »

Well I got a little more accomplished. I did a little design change today, I removed what I called the chin at the bottom side of the heart. I held a piece of stiff sand paper, & drew a cutting line, then proceeded cut off the chins.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Note; the cut off line. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A big improvement with no chins. I call this “Wooden surgery.” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~...

My Keeping Chest with Charles Neil

686 days ago by mikega | 10 comments »

In my last blog I mentioned that I was working on a Keeping Chest that I started back in October when I was in New Market for a class with Charles Neil. This is one of the 3 projects that we worked on that weekend (checkout the You-Tube video called 36 Hours with Charles to see the other projects I started). Well I got my chest done on Christmas day. The Saturday before Christmas I got an early Christmas present when I found my 7 disks DVD set called “The Adventures for Bob and Charl...

My 2008 "Not Just Any Box" Winter Awards #2: The start of my, "Not any kind of box"

687 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 16 comments »

I said I wasn’t going to enter, but I opened up the latest issue of “Woodworkers Journal,” They had a centerfold of how to make a bandsawn box. I read it over, & right away I thought, there’s something I can try, & make one for the L J’s contest. I’ve never tried making a bandsawn box before, & besides that, it would be a good test for my new Rikon. I’ve had these nice blocks of burly maple that I picked up at our local city pa...

Greene inspired Night Stand #2: Storm pause

687 days ago by ChicoWoodnut | 6 comments »

I got over to the lumber store to look at some mahogany last Thursday. Friday we had the storm of the century here in Northern California. Knocked down my lemon tree and a good chunk of fence in the back yard so I got diverted from this project cleaning up stuff. I did get some time to make a rendering of how to use the boards I am going to get tomorrow. I took the components of my sketchup model and layed them out on some 10” x 8’ boards. Doing this, I got to think out the w...

The chair (design) that will not go away

687 days ago by FritzM | 26 comments »

I have been struggling with the final arm rest/leg design of a redwood patio chair, so I thought I would document the process and the progress thus far and as it moves forward (at a snails pace). First off, when I originally sketched this chair I fell in love. I couldn’t wait to get into the shop and get started. The need was for a set of deck chairs but i really wanted to avoid a straight Adirondack design. I was trying to get a comfortable contemporary look with both a minimal ...

My 2008 "Not Just Any Box" Winter Awards #1: I finally decided to enter!

687 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 9 comments »

I wasn’t planning on entering, but yesterday the bug bit me. I usually like to use the material I have on hand, & I couldn’t find a 2×4, so I decided to make a box. I drew up a pattern of what I wanted to make, & proceeded on my adventure. That’s all I’m going to show you today is a picture of the piece of wood I’m using. After all, this is top secret! Continued!

The multi-purposed 2x4 Winter 2008 #1: Roughing it out.

688 days ago by YorkshireStewart | 6 comments »

I normally spend very little time in my workshop in the winter months. The build-up to Christmas is a busy time, what with all the gifts I choose to make, and it always seemed much more appealing indoors. The ten paces through wind and rain to my ‘shop seemed such a long walk. (Here's the finished chair.) Until the Lumberjocks challenge, that is! My wife can’t believe the enthusiasm I’ve shown the last few days to get out there after breakfast, only returning when she presses t...

2X4 Winter Contest #2: Day two - With Pics

690 days ago by Jamie | 16 comments »

Well, So far so good.. The glue has set and now I have a nice 13×18 inch blank to work with. I have traced the shape design on it, and have cut it out with the bandsaw. This left some material on each side that will be extremely valuable to finish the project. I am really starting to feel good about it. So far everything has worked out as planned. There are going to be so many little pieces that will have to be made The only thing I am worried about is not being able to complete ...

Office/Guest room. #1: Designing block

691 days ago by Aubster | 7 comments »

Hello everyone, My wife and I have been designing our office in a way that we hope will fit our needs and server as a guest room for our kids when they come to visit. When we got the news that we are becoming first time grandparents, we quickly changed some of the design a bit and got started on it right away. We drew this up in Skecthup and liked it because it met many of our needs. < The top will accommodate a full size bed so that it is not too big, but can sleep two people ...

2X4 Winter Contest #1: The beginning

691 days ago by Jamie | 4 comments »

Well, I started working on my 2×4 project today. Last weekend I picked up a bunch of 2×4’s at Lowes to construct a new lumber rack, with 1 to spare for the contest. I was a little afraid that one 2×4 wouldn’t be enough to complete the project, but it looks like I will have a few scraps left. I cut some of the pieces today, 4 – 18” long pieces have been jointed and edge-glued together to form one plank (needed it to be a little longer than what is r...
