When i first designed these cabinets I really wanted to have them look like peices of furniture as opposed to cabinets. The posts go a long way in achieving that look, but I figured taking out the kickplates would really seal the deal. I had thought about the dust bunny conundrum. I figured if dusting underneath the cabinets became too much for my wife and I, I could always add kickplates later without any trouble. I’ve designed my kitchen like my workshop since I do most of the coo...

I have actually had the bench in this stage since early September when my father in law was in town to give me a hand in mounting the top, beam and all, to the sled. It went on just right the first time which was rewarding, until I looked closer at the planing beam pipes and realized I was going to have to make some adjustments on the alignment holes in the top. After several go ‘rounds, we finally got that into a workable solution. Then I raised the planing beam only to discover it ...

Finally decided on a drawer configuration I can live with. Overlay fronts and full extension slides.
The cabinet doors will be frame and panel, I just didnt get around to drawing the panels in yet.
The drawers are just boxes in this drawing. I haven’t drawn in the joinery for the doors or drawers yet. At this stage I was mostly playing around with drawer sizes and spacing.
The handles will probably change too, type and location.
And the mod...

The first step for the sides is to thickness the bookmatched sides. In the kit, these sides are about 4 mm thick. They need to be brought down to about 1.8 mm thick. We first used something called a Safe-T planer which is a drill press attachment that can remove material very quickly. Just like a regular thickness planer it creates a big mess quickly.
A drum sander was used to get down to final thickness.
Next we jointed one edge of the sides. This edge will be the edge wher...

Got back in the shop this afternoon and after two trips to the orange box I get all of the electrical work done. I am very happy with how it turned out. This is a custom piece much different from Norm’s plan. The switch is from Grizzly, I have the 12/2 wire on hand, the rest is from the orange box. Total outlay about $38. The switch works great even though it is mounted sideways. Here is a view of the internals.Below the switch you can see I finally got the 17/32nd drill bit in and star...

I have started taking a classical guitar construction class at Red Rocks Community College in Lakewood, CO. I’ll be blogging about it here as my journal through the process.
The kit that we are using is the KLC guitar kit from Luthiers Mercantile International . The kit has all the wood and hardware for building a classical guitar. It also comes with a DVD – “Build a Classical Guitar with Robert O’Brien”. Robbie is the teacher of our class. He teaches several...

I don’t have a band saw, so I had to trust my less-than-accurate table saw, and I got to play around with my new jig saw.
I followed the steps outlined in David Marks’ European Hand Plane episode. I had to use my table saw to cut the cheeks and the two angles on the body. Then I used the jigsaw to cut the curve. Unfortunately the blade deflected during the cut, so it took a lot of filing and sanding to get it back to semi-true.
Next I need to drill the holes for the d...

Picture your shop… now picture it packed into a storage unit for 2 years…
As I’ve mentioned, I’m finally to the point where I can move stuff in, but that means I have to clear out the construction debris which I’ve been making of late. I spent an hour or so this morning after a Dr’s appt. I had the morning off from work as well, so I went out and tidied up. Not something I had done yet, I was just letting the sawdust and cutoffs pile up… until no...

I debated whether I should put this entry here or over at HomeRefurbers, but that site really hasn’t taken off yet, and the process of coming up with our kitchen cabinets is feeling a whole lot more like woodworking than it is home improvement. Although an upgrade from the 1 person 1947 kitchen will certainly be an improvement.
My arm was good enough this weekend to play in the shop again. My main project was to mock up a prototype to some lightweight appliance lift ideas I̵...
