I think I need help. It’s happening. I cannot stop researching planes and workbenches lately. I don’t have room for a bench, nor money for any planes, but they’re just so enticing! Lie-Nielsen has been the most attractive by far, but I find it staggering the number of planes available – 44 standards listed, with an additional 30 variants, not including left/right hand options for the few that have them (same price in each case). The bench plane model numbers (e.g. N...
Kind of a sad topic, but so it is. A good friend of ours died a couple of months ago and her husband commissioned me to make some cedar boxes for her and her sister. The sister died 2 years before, also from breast cancer. They were both still in their 50s.He provided the wood and asked for plain wooden boxes. Humph- I don’t DO plain, so I figured I’d do what I wanted and just charge him for plain boxes. These are the pieces of 1’ x 1” boards after I planed, sawed them,...
Well after another two months of stewing I decided the best way to get rid of temptation was to give in to it and I bought the Dowelmax. Delighted with both the product and the service. As for the price… 300$ in the bank earns 2% after tax i.e.$6 a year. With inflation at 4% this means I was losing £6 a year….misery.Converting the cash into the Dowelmax means I have an asset which will last a lifetime, (or several lifetimes), appreciate in value, make/save money by using it on p...
Many of my friends have been asking me for a copy of a “sales catalog” that shows pictures and prices of all the handcrafted pens and products that I have made? I imagine that I could just start cutting and pasting pictures of each of me pens, and then adding materials types and prices, however that seems to be a lot of work and has the potential to become unstructured and non-uniform, i.e. different sized pictures, formatting options, lack of table of contents, titles, etc. ...
Well, one more bowl turned and one more blog entry to write. And believe me, this is a good time to write this. It’s 4 degrees outside and 34 degrees in the shop. This topic is coming to a close. There are only a couple left to do I can think of, unless you have questions. Hell, there must be a couple of questions in Turlock. This is a tough topic to tackle. Say that 5 times really quick. Your pricing structure is this entries topic. The first component of any price structure is the cost. ...
Pricing Projects I see the topic of pricing work come up over and over again, so I thought I would share my thoughts on the matter. By no means am I a guru of pricing or anything, but I have come up with a decent system that seems to work for me. I am currently a “full time” woodworker, but haven’t been for long. There are many more experienced folks on LJ’s, so take this with a grain of salt. I start with the same master excel spreadsheet for every project. The spreadsheet has three se...
