I have just about finished the bench. As it is right now, everything is functioning and I have moved it over to the actual work area. Tasks completed include:1) Mounted clips on the stretcher for the face clamps;2) Drilled holes in the bars of the face clamps so they can be adjusted with speed pins;3) Milled and mounted the drop-in clamping blocks for the tail vice clamps (used in the well);4) Cut and mounted the planing wedge to the front rail.

so After setting on the last design (see previous post in this series) I went out to disassemble the bowling alley laminated top – the purpose was to remove all the nails, so that I can drill the dog holes, and also laminate it in a double stack to give me a 4” top on the perimeter (5” in from the edges – for clamping purposes, and leg attachments).
This idea turned to be disastrous. The nails are hardened steel, and twisted making the job of pulling them outridicul...

Well, a while ago I asked for some advice about buying walnut lumber. I promised to post a few pictures of what I purchased but I had soem camera issues. It has probably been 2 months now, and I’ve seen some much more impressive photos of raw lumber posted, particularly from Darren, but I’m finally going to post what I was able to get.
First is a photo of some of the raw lumber. This is probably 3/4 of what I bought. The other quarter I have posted below after cleaning it up...

I have known that I wanted to build a Roubo bench for a long while now. A few months ago, more than I want to try and figure out, I purchased enough 2×10x12’ hem-fir to build a bench 24” x 60” with 3” square legs and a 3” thick top. I brought the unwieldy 12’ long boards home and cut them all in half on my back deck then brought them down to the basement and stacked them temporarily (read improperly). On Saturday (the day after our baby was due, and he’s still not here!), my wonderful wife said, “Why don’t you go do some woodworking?” Since I was actually in the mood to tackle the next task on my Lego Table, I went for it!

My grade school arithmetic left me with some rather incomplete lessons in the basics. I learned yesterday that 8 / 4 is not equal to 2 in the real world.
I took my rough-dimensioned ash over to a friends shop yesterday to get some time on his 8” jointer and planer. So I’ve got the pieces for my box cut mostly to size. The walls are all currently about 5 1/2” long – I’m going to trim just a bit off of two of them (to get them to 5 1/3”) and I’ll trim the other two down to 4” (and they’ll be about 2” tall). But first, I have a planing issue.
