Tools and tool troubles. #1: Plainer problems.

665 days ago by Roz | 5 comments »

OK, I was paining 6 pieces of Red Oak down to 3/4 after replacing blades in the middle of the process. when I completed the job I had one board 3/4, one 1/2, two 5/8 and one 10/16th. I realize I did not do any calibration after installing the new blades, I didn’t have to do any on the previous change out so skipped it this time. Also the lumber was of a poor grade with a lot of bowing and cupping. But I can’t figure out why I got such inconsistent results. Am I asking too mu...

Which Tool Would You Buy???

667 days ago by Brad | 10 comments »

My birthday is coming up and I’ve told everyone nothing but money because I want to get some new tools. I’m guessing all in all I’ll have around $500 to spend. I’m considering a band saw, 13” planer, biscuit jointer or a new router/plunge router combo. So what do you guys think??? Which is going to give me the best advance in shop versatility?

New tools for the shop!!!

668 days ago by itsme_timd | 5 comments »

I just looked at my workshop page and noticed that in the few months I’ve been on here I’ve been really busy building out my shop, I’ve made a few small purchases along the way and went all out this week and bought a few big items. I was invited to join a local group of woodworkers here and was introduced to craigslist as well as going to ‘The Woodworking Show’ here in Atlanta last weekend. I’ve never been much for moderation or patience; I’ve really put a lot into my shop in a short amoun...

Wood Scrap Box #1: Parts and Pieces

680 days ago by CutNRun | 4 comments »

Two days before Christmas, my wife casually mentions that she would like a jewelry box. Hmmm, don’t think the timing was very good. Having completed the 2×4 project, I decided to try to put together a jewelry box from the small pieces of wood laying around in my shop. I had a decent amount of 1/2” cherry, some figured maple, some oak, and a small amount of paduk. After spending a few days laying out a design and seeing if I had enough wood, I started cutting and gluing.Th...

Not Just Any Box #1: Preparing the Way

681 days ago by YorkshireStewart | 14 comments »

I’d been living with this board of burr / burl or pippy oak in the workshop for five or six years and must have picked it up and put it back down at least a hundred times (approx!). I have done quite a few boxes in the past with lids something like this: but I always intended that this piece would be used in a different way, and for something a little bit special. Though I’ve made many boxes, I have never thought of doing one for me, so this challenge presents an opportunity. ...

Shop Organization #3: Flip Top-Planer Cart Part 1. and Screw Thread Question

683 days ago by gizmodyne | 12 comments »

Planer cartI decided to build a flip top cart for my planer. I looked through several forums, magazines, and plans and decided on a hybrid of the Wood and Woodsmith plans. My drawings and notes. I am using plywood left from building the shop. It is a rough luan. A different look for shop stuff. My first rip with the SawStop. Very cool. Dead accurate. So different from using my little Ridgid. The top is made of two matching pieces. I cut a dado in the top to house a 1/2” ste...

2 x 4 Project #1: A one entry blog

689 days ago by CutNRun | 13 comments »

Yesterday, I posted a taper jig project. The taper jig was used in my entry for the 2×4 Project. Before the taper jig was made, I had to locate a 2×4 to use. This was relatively easy. I knew a local lumber yard carried very high quality Douglas fir dimension lumber for use in finish work. I located a completely clear, tight grained 8’ board. The only downside was it cost substantially more than the typical big box store stud. Oh well, this is for FURNITURE, not being st...

2X4 Winter Contest #1: The beginning

690 days ago by Jamie | 4 comments »

Well, I started working on my 2×4 project today. Last weekend I picked up a bunch of 2×4’s at Lowes to construct a new lumber rack, with 1 to spare for the contest. I was a little afraid that one 2×4 wouldn’t be enough to complete the project, but it looks like I will have a few scraps left. I cut some of the pieces today, 4 – 18” long pieces have been jointed and edge-glued together to form one plank (needed it to be a little longer than what is r...

First Shop #4: Plans for the New Year! (Purchase Plan)

699 days ago by YooperCasey | 5 comments »

A new year is almost upon us and I’m going to tell you folks about my tool purchase plans for this year and see if I can get some good advice. Also, as a chance to pat myself on the back, today is my one year anniversary of quitting smoking! If I would have saved what I spent for cigarettes if I would have smoked, I would have $3650 to purchase a woodshop with. Then it’d be all Festool and Gold! The first task I had was deciding what major tools I would want. I’ve manage...
