First of all let me say that this is the first hand plane I have ever made. I looked at some plans to get the general idea, but basically I am making it up as I go. There are things I did wrong but I will be able to fix them.
I saw this type of sole on some planes in magazines and always wondered how they did it.It took me a while but I figured it out. Simple once you know how.

After a long week at work, I decided it was time to start the process of restoring my bench planes. I have been collecting them for a while with the intent of getting a good set of operational hand planes. I am hoping I will get a good set of usable planes at a reasonable cost.
Currently, I have the following size planes set aside for restoration: #3, #4, #4 1/2, #605, #5 1/2, #6, #7 and #8. All of these are Stanley except for the #8 which is a Sargent VBM 428. The #4 1/2 and t...

Last week’s event in Chicago was fantastic. Being a novice, I really learned a lot from the many demonstrations and from getting to play with some fine tools. A couple of highlights for me were being able to try out Chris Schwarz’s ebony infill smoothing plane (by Wayne Anderson) and hearing Jeff Miller discuss the design and production of his beautiful Cantata chair. Based on an article by James Thompson I found on OldToolsShop.com. I though I woud try using Citric Acid for rust removal. The article can be found at the following link.

Citric acid is used in food processing and seems to do a good job removing rust. I checked the local yellow pages and found a local beer home brewing store. I called them and confirmed that I could purchase citric acid for $5 per pound. I made...

I have not really been woodworking all that long. I have actually owned a sawmill longer than I have been making any finished wood projects, long story. I have debated making a proper bench for some time. My old/first bench was a row of kitchen cabinets I took out on a remodel I did as a contractor with a solid plank on top. Everyone has different needs, I tried to design mine to fit the work I do. If I need to I can easily make modifications, as is I am calling it “done for now”....

I had seen this vintage sleigh in Wood magazine some time ago and I had to go searching to find it again. It was in December 1997, Issue 101 I believe that I’ve seen it somewhere else but I didn’t want to buy the article without searching further. One of the new officers at the Woodworking Club thought he might have it.
He did and he brought the magazine to me and i scanned it and created a pdf for future use and to keep from cutting up his magazine.

well unfortunately i will not be able to have the table saw station that i was hoping for but a router table is something i need so i am making one on the side of my table saw. i started by cutting down all the MDF with my cousin pat’s (Anthrax) help. then i started putting the torsion box together. it is all based on where the bolts are for my table saw and in the center fitted for the rockler plate that i am planning on getting in the future just i don’t have the money now. so h...
