A few months ago I had read an article about ebonizing wood with steel wool and vinegar. Awhile back I tried this and absolutely nothing happened. I never even tried again. Ebonizing is a stain of sorts I guess. I also have heard there are several ways of doing this. The reason the original article caught my eye was because I sure as hell don’t have the money to buy Ebony (wood), and I am forever wanting or needing dark/black wood for my projects and I do not like to use paint, to the ...

Hey everyone,
I was asked by a few of you from my blog “How to find legal burls” “once I get them how do I cut the burls”?
Well I just made a short vidio on how I cut to the burl in the context of a bowl or hollow form blank.
Please coment and add if I don’t cover it well. If you not want to go thru the hassle of finding and cutting your own you can alway buy from me. LOLThanksGreg

Hey everyone, It was suggested that I start a discussion on how to find and harvest burls. Please give your input also.
I don’t deal with straight grain that often. I cut and sell burls for a living so here is what I know.
It is illegal to harvest a burl without permission. of course if it is on your own property you can give yourself permission. What I do is put an ad on Craig’s list saying I want your burls. Most people don’t know what burls are. So you don’t get that many calls....

a few weeks ago i starting trying to build a project using mortise and tenon because its something I had never done before. Started by building the Tenoning Jig, and I was happy with the results.
Frontside of Jig;Backside of Jig;
I cut the mortise with forstner bits I just got for christmas.
then the tenon on the new jig.
after mitering the tenons i did my first test fit of a corner.
This is my first exercise in mortise and tenon and its been alot of fun. I hope to get better...

First up in this project is to sort through the wood I have available and find pieces that I want to use for each part. As I mentioned in part 1 the wood im using i salvaged from a house remodeling project and its some sort of pine and some douglas fir. here is what im working with
Some of the wood is really dirty with caked on dirt and grime along with some roofing tar (these pieces were in the attic). not sure that i wanted to subject my planer and jointer to that much abuse i decide...

Well it was just about a year ago that I started on this project, eventually I entered it in the Winter lumberjocks contest, some may remember it,it even got a few votes. Time to make the lid.
Easy enough, I made it overlap about a half inch on each side (mostly dictated based on the size of the project panels that I used) and 1.5” on the front for the lifting of the lid.
I should comment here on the project panels issue. I bought the standard project pine panels for this project at Home Depot and I felt a bit guilty about it. I told my fiancee when I bought them that I felt like I was “cheating” and that buying the pre assembled pane...
