Ebonizing; Steel Wool and Vinegar

450 days ago by Allison | 28 comments »

A few months ago I had read an article about ebonizing wood with steel wool and vinegar. Awhile back I tried this and absolutely nothing happened. I never even tried again. Ebonizing is a stain of sorts I guess. I also have heard there are several ways of doing this. The reason the original article caught my eye was because I sure as hell don’t have the money to buy Ebony (wood), and I am forever wanting or needing dark/black wood for my projects and I do not like to use paint, to the ...

How to find and harvest legal burls!

46 days ago by OregonBurls | 32 comments »

Hey everyone, It was suggested that I start a discussion on how to find and harvest burls. Please give your input also. I don’t deal with straight grain that often. I cut and sell burls for a living so here is what I know. It is illegal to harvest a burl without permission. of course if it is on your own property you can give yourself permission. What I do is put an ad on Craig’s list saying I want your burls. Most people don’t know what burls are. So you don’t get that many calls....

Warriors of Wood ….i have travailed the road that others could not see,and while on this road i carried pictures inside my head, where none could side-track me from my dreams of wood, just as wood and i have learned to deal with our times of age…. ….still working wood just as the wood works me in style,my character has many times been planed by the hand of wood, till even now there is the gnawing pain that pushes me faster, much to do as still counting the opportunities of project...

CENTAUR counter, mostrador CENTAURO #3: My workflow always decreases towards the end ...

80 days ago by Alejandro Galo Moreno | 9 comments »

Although all my previous designing, my efforts to get the piece of furniture to the very best end I can, usually met lots of minor cuestions to be solved, before finishing the job to my complete satisfaction. And this is the reason why the work sticks to the bench towards the end. Actually I’m never 100% satisfy. That’s the price I pay for the personal discoverys that represent my designs. Others don’t find it that much important, but it i...

Secret Compartment Toy Box #3: More Progress

92 days ago by John M | 8 comments »

Time to make the lid. Easy enough, I made it overlap about a half inch on each side (mostly dictated based on the size of the project panels that I used) and 1.5” on the front for the lifting of the lid. I should comment here on the project panels issue. I bought the standard project pine panels for this project at Home Depot and I felt a bit guilty about it. I told my fiancee when I bought them that I felt like I was “cheating” and that buying the pre assembled pane...
