Meanderings #3: Catching up on Life's events...

11-15-2013 10:12 AM by David Craig | 6 comments »

I haven’t been here for awhile. My apologies to friends here and thank you for the emails expressing your concern. Largest reason for my absence these last few months involves this - I have mentioned in my last blog that I had a hearing that came up to discuss the new “formula” that is being imposed in the state of Michigan for child support deductions. I won’t go into any tirades but the increase was pretty significant and my take home salary has been greatly r...

Work(shop) in Progress #17: Sharpening Station

10-28-2011 09:04 PM by PurpLev | 4 comments »

When I started working with bladed tools (chisels/planes/etc) I wanted a sharpening system that was on the cheap, small and storable and versatile. I chose to start with the scary sharp, and used sand papers from 100grit (rough shaping and cleaning nicked blades) to 2500 for final honing and green compound for touch ups. I added the Veritas MK-II honing guide and was using it for reshaping/resestting blades and honing them through the grits. While this method worked for the time I wanted s...

Overload

08-02-2011 11:20 PM by WoodSimplyMade | 3 comments »

Hey all, I already suffer from an anxiety/panic disorder which led me to find woodworking as my escape. I use it to gain focus, clear my mind and lower my breathing, heart rate and anxiety. When working with wood, I get so focused on the wood, that I don’t think or worry about anything else around me or whatever happened throughout the day. I listen to country music as I woodwork in my garage and brings me to a calm place. Only thing now after working with wood for about 4 years, I...

Misc #2: Where I have I been? What have I been up to?

03-04-2011 09:11 PM by Lisa Chan | 5 comments »

Last year was a whirlwind of activity for this very green woodturner. I started off blogging strong through Lumber Jocks and participating in community forums, posting images of my works in progress, and making new friends here. And then something happened. I began to consistently get orders for my spindle work from wonderful men and women in the international fiber arts community who helped direct and shape a new business for me. Simultaneously, I also lit off a gasoline fire of a topic b...

Consider it Character Building...

07-05-2010 06:50 PM by David Craig | 11 comments »

Not a woodworking blog per se, but then again I believe in a holistic universe where everything involves working with wood :) I haven’t been in the shop for awhile, I have my boys this week for a portion of their summer vacation. I bought a raft last year so that we can “enjoy” the natural resources that surround us and we went out for our second outing yesterday. Lesson learned – Look up the phone number that tells you the readings from the river gauge BEFORE you g...

Barrel of Monkeys

06-12-2010 08:07 AM by David Craig | 17 comments »

I have been an LJ member for about 6 months now, admiring the projects of those so gifted and occasionally posting my humble offerings. Working on my latest project, I realized, we are all part of a chain of a living barrel of monkeys. When we are new, the top, the bar that is raised, seems so very high, impossible to climb or reach up to. But, when we lift up our hand (our paw?) we don’t touch empty air, but a hand above us that connects us to the chain as we reach our own hand to t...

Personal #2: How I got here - Motivation

06-07-2010 05:43 AM by RichJr | 4 comments »

Motivation – or, how I got here If you read my previous post (good lord, do you have a lot of free time…) it says nothing of how I got to HERE. It probably isn’t worth reading and will probably delete it, so let me summarize here: I’m a computer guy, no history of woodworking, recently married with new baby. I’ve had to cut ties with the hobbies that filled the small amounts of time leftover after work and family. No money to buy Video Games nor the ti...

Personal #1: Where I'm coming from - A non-woodworking introduction

06-06-2010 08:53 PM by RichJr | 1 comment »

Well, I’m finally starting a blog. I’ve thought of doing so many times before in a couple of different contexts and never got around to it (at least not well enough to prevent me from deleting what I had previously posted). The one thing I believe in doing is letting the reader know where I’m coming from. Most of what I write is going to come from a particular perspective, and if the reader doesn’t know that, how much help can it be? This is especially true in the ...

I'm Back...

05-13-2010 09:02 PM by David Craig | 14 comments »

Sorry folks for my little hiatus from the LJ community. I had one week with an extremely busy work schedule followed by a week where my wife and I decided to make our separation permanent. Took a little bit of time to mull things over and have come to the conclusion it is best for both parties. I have a buddy who likes to jokingly remind me that I don’t know enough about women yet, that I was one marriage shy of being educated. On this, I will have to agree with him :) One good thing...

Just finishing up my latest projects

04-21-2010 02:39 AM by 76winger | 0 comments »

Since the first of the year I’ve turned my first two bowls from curly maple and made a custom pen & pencil set with case out of Mahogany. I’ll be posting pics soon! I’ve also received a donation of several Walnut logs (saved from a friends firewood pile!), that I believe are going to make some excellent bowl, platter and vessel blanks. The price was right (free!) so they’ll certainly make for good turning practice as well as nice final products (at least I hope!).
