I have been saving my pennies for a thickness sander. I really need one for surfacing small stock for boxes. There seems to be only two (and a half) models in my price range: Grizzly G0459 12” and the Performax 628900 Mini 10-Inch (which as far as I can tell is identical to the Jet 10-20 Plus?) Grizzly G0459 12”: $495.00 on Amazon plus shipping, only one review (5 star). Performax 628900 Mini 10-Inch: $499.99 on Amazon with free shipping, reviews state tracking problems. ...
1st Acoustic Guitar Happy-Fun Time #4: Rosette Design, Joining the Soundboard, and Performax 22/44 Fun
I’m swamped with two other concurrent projects at the moment, but I have found time to contemplate a Design for the rosette, as well as play around a little with my new eBay bargain, the Performax 22/44 drum sander. Rosette Theory The idea of the rosette is derived less from artistic design opportunities, which it certainly is, but more by the structural need to reinforce the sound hole in such thin, soft woods like spruce, cedar, redwood, or whatever stock is normally chosen for ...
First things first: I’m writing about something I did … I’m not saying you should do it. Use your own judgment and common sense! Read your manuals. If something seems dangerous, don’t do it. I’m no expert … not by a long shot, so don’t trust me over what your granddad told you or over what the little voice in your head tells you about keeping track of your digits and limbs. I welcome all supportive advice, feedback, and questions. Recently I bought...
One of the most favorite tools in my shop is my Performax (Jet) 16-32 Plus drum sander. I use it on almost every project. However, this power tool has one characteristic that has proven to be a great vexation to me over the last 15 years – the tendency to trip the motor circuit breaker while sanding. This one part blog describes my journey to find a solution to this problem. The 1 1/2HP Jet drum sander drive motor has a thermal circuit breaker rated at 15 Amperes. Exceeding this limit for ...
I’m new to blogging; forgive my errors. Was thinking about better dust collection for my Performax 16/32 sander. That 2.5 hole was wholly inadequate.Decided to modify the top plastic cover with a 12×4” register box allowing direct connection to 6” ducting. Cut the hole, mounted the box, snipped the short ends to allow them to be bent inside the cover, drilled and screwed those “wings” down, and ran a length of heavy duty duct tape to seal all edges. Incred...
I have noticed any number of shop vacuums are being manufactured under a variety of brand names with a large On/Off rocker switch on top. The switch is failure prone. Saw dust and fine wood chips can accumulate on top of the vac and work their way into the switch. That was certainly true of the Performax vacuum. Performax 4 Gallon 5 Peak HP Job Site Wet/Dry Vac Number: 2404827 that I purchased. It lasted a couple of weeks stationed by my lathe. Then, nothing – it would not turn...
How to convert your Performax drum sanders 2 ½ inch dust port to a 4 inch for less then 5 bucks I have the older model 16 – 32 Performax drum sander like this one and at times it is a pain in the you know what with the belt always needing consent adjustment and keeping the machines drum head level. I really love the machine and what can be done with it.But it kicks up a lot of fine dust, my dust collector system works pretty well but as we all know it is next to impossible to ...
