I’ve had a couple of questions as to what I use for finish on my pens. So, I thought I’d post a small process flow. I didn’t do the drilling process because the batteries died, so this is the lathe process. I’ve purchased a couple of new lathe pen making tools, and I got a new Lathe chisel for my birthday. So this is the first time on this lathe. And the first time with these tools, but I’ve used the finish before. I got a new Carbide Lathe tool. I saw t...
While making my first pen for my wife for Valantines day, the items needed ran me about 100 bucks. I turned the first section of wood, and the motor goes. Few days later and 50 bucks later, back in business. I finished the first section and started on the next block and the first one split from the end bushings. No problem, glued and secured in a socket that worked as a nice clamp. A day later the glue dried nice and continued with turning the second section and the first and finished se...
I’m frequently asked, “What does it actually cost to make a pen?” (Mostly at arts and craft shows I am attending or participating in.) (I keep a copy at all art shows now) Here’s the list of items that I use to make a pen. The good news is that after the first pen you make they become much less expensive. Some of these items can be eliminated or something else can be substituted for what is listed. If you already have a table saw, or band saw, a drill press or other items the initial ...
I completed another 4 pens earlier this week (I’m on vacation this week). Lessons learned: Always sand your edges: I now give the edges of my turned segments a little touch-up with 600+ grit sandpaper (wet) after they come off of the mandrel to soften them before assembly. Having a sharp edge where the turned portion transitions to the kit piece doesn’t feel nice at all. Working late to “finish 1 more” isn’t a good idea: Knowing that its late means that I...
I just accidentally deleted my blog entry so lets try this again… These are pens that I made for a few of friends for their Businesses. I used testors decal paper like Kerux has so eloquently portrayed. I should probably mention that these were gifts. I did not charge for them. There is a subsequent video that I created to show how I make pens from start to finish, including putting the decal on. I am only going to link the first one, because there are 5. If you like want t...
This is a project I worked on where I took Sliver Filigree and worked it into a pen. The silver filigree was hand made 100%. I worked the filigree around the tube and then fixed it on to the tube. I then cast it in resin and turned as you wood any other pen. I learned a few things along the way. I did not pick a pen kit with enough meat on the bones so to speak for the tube. the filigree even as thin as I could get it was to tall and came through during the turning proce...
I got a lathe in June 2015. It’s a Rikon mini lathe. For more on it, watch this video. Anyway, It sat unused until October 2015 when I was finally able to purchase some tools. To learn how to turn, I am starting with pens. I got everything I needed to make pens and have made 2 on this lathe. The first two pens I made were at a friend’s shop. He invited me to check out his shop and showed me how to turn pens. I knew then that I needed a lathe because it was just fun to turn out ...
