Some time ago I posted a blog about a dovetail joint I came up with. I call it the radial dovetail. It incorporates handcut dovetails, but rather than using the traditional 1:8 ratio for the dovetail angle for hardwood, each side of each tail varies and is drawn from a perspective point. Then the sides of the box were contoured to blend with the dovetail design.

Hello everyone! Since I discovered Sketchup several years ago (I have been Skecthing since release 3..pre Google) I have spent a great deal of time watching tutorials and prowling through the forums trying to learn as much about this great software as I can! When I returned to woodworking several years ago my nephew had been talking about a particular style of “coffee” table he’d seen online somewhere and was describing it to me. Since he’d just announced plans to marry, I told him I’d make him, and his fiancée, the table as a wedding gift.
He showed me some online photos of the table, which I used as the basic, general design plan. The joinery I chose is original but the style was taken from the photos.

I hesitate to do this, that which I am about to do. I don’t fancy myself as a good carver, or a great picture drawer. Especially with so many lumberjocks that are great carvers here that will see this. On top of that, there are so many great carvers on the internet that will stumble onto this blog because they surf the net.

The Hole in My KitchenFor the past two years we have lived with a hole in the wall of the kitchen where the fridge was. I was going to turn this into a pantry, but we decided to put the fridge back in.
We found a fridge that would accept custom panels. It is 36” wide. and only 24” deep to the doors.We had to cut back one stud in the wall to accommodate the depth and reinforce the floor for the weight, but the hole/nook is ready for the fridge.

I love craigslist.
Around the same time I began the planning for my new shop, I started using “igoogle” for my browser homepage. Sunday evening and it’s time to blog about the weekend in the shop.
First on the agenda was to move the big tools around to make room to make a 54” by 144” table top in a two-car garage.
Went to the blue box store and picked up a couple of 2×6 x 12’s and three sheets of 5/8 particleboard.
I extended my workbench to be 4 foot by 12 foot. Works great!

So for a very long time I have been planning to build my daughter a bed.
I have been reading anything I could get about bed construction (I really liked “Anatomy of a Bed” from Fine Woodworking), checking out different beds for design concepts, and construction methods, and have been mentally practicing building it for the longest time.

This was an interesting project that I worked on a few years ago. The photo above show the panels in the original room at Henwood Priory, Warwickshire, England. It is the only thing I had to go on. One wall had a fireplace that someone must have blacked out before the auction because it was not part of the sale.( a note: the photos that I use in this blog are rather large so you can see some of the detail. just click on them to see the whole photo and click again to see them actual size )...

If I had one machinery purchase to do over again it would be to buy an 8” jointer and instead of a 6” model. My desire to use wider boards on this project led to a lot of time with my hand planes. I planed one face of each board flat and then ran them through my planer to get them to the proper thickness. After laying out the panels I put the mating glue joints up in my face vise and planed them with my trusty Stanley #7. I feel that doing this always gives me a really great glue ...
