Hey everyone, It was suggested that I start a discussion on how to find and harvest burls. Please give your input also.
I don’t deal with straight grain that often. I cut and sell burls for a living so here is what I know.
It is illegal to harvest a burl without permission. of course if it is on your own property you can give yourself permission. What I do is put an ad on Craig’s list saying I want your burls. Most people don’t know what burls are. So you don’t get that many calls....

Hello All,
Here’s my attempt at entering the Bookcase Challenge. My plans are for a Corner Bookcase Unit, with a Rotating Center Section. It will be constructed in two sections, Top and Bottom. These will be subdivided into three (3) sections, with the two (2) outer areas having Solid Oak framed Glass Doors with a golden color grill work attatched. Dovetail Pen Progress Pictures.
OK, I managed to get a few pictures off the camera. Just bare with me, this is my “garage” camera so the resolution/quality is not top notch.

I have gotten a few questions (actually 3) from folk about to how create the Incra Double Dovetails Joints such as the one in this project:
I will not be making a box in this blog. But a really good friend saw this box and asked if I could make a 14” x 19” serving tray in the same style. Maureen has been a huge help to my wife and I so I was happy to get a chance to make something for her.

First step of a double dovetail is to cut a through dovetail on each side piece and then attach a trim piece. This blog entry will cover that process.
So starting with the end pieces and a 6” piece of trim stock (same width as the side piece, thickness doesn’t matter).
Install the two template strips into the positioning system (1 dovetail strip and 1 double dovetail strip).

In this video I show you how to make a simple yet elegant lift lid box. These little boxes can be made with with different woods to give them their own character, and due to the simplicity they can be made in batches.. They make a great gift to give someone. The boxes in the videos are made from Spalted Pecan, White Oak, & Mahogany. Each Box was finished with 2 coats of Danish Oil to bring out the natural beauty and color of the woods.

My version of Ron McIntire’s segmented pen. This just happens to be the way I do it… that best fits how I think through the process. I’m sure there are many other variables in getting the same end.
First of all I make a checkerboard blank. The one in this Tutorial is Paduak and Maple. (It works best with contrasting colors).
The next step is to cut the sections in equal sizes. I made a ‘zero tolerance’ jig for my miter saw that helps me cut all the sections.

It was a good day yesterday. Again I am excited today because I get to cut out a new project. I finished designing my next candle holder yesterday and I have an extremely beautiful piece of padauk just waiting for the scroll saw this morning. It is so pretty, with bright orange and dark brown streaks running through it. Unfortunately with cutting a scroll saw design into it, you tend to lose the pattern of the grain.
