Quick, which is bigger, 5/16th or 11/32nd? Having trouble? Try this. Which one is bigger 10 or 12? Easy right? I’m all about easy and trying to remember how to convert fractions isn’t really something I want my brain working on with spinning sharp blades around. Hey everyone, It was suggested that I start a discussion on how to find and harvest burls. Please give your input also. I don’t deal with straight grain that often. I cut and sell burls for a living so here is what I know. It is illegal to harvest a burl without permission. of course if it is on your own property you can give yourself permission. What I do is put an ad on Craig’s list saying I want your burls. Most people don’t know what burls are. So you don’t get that many calls....

I found a posting in the ‘Free’ section of Craig’s List for some scrap wood piled up next to the curb. It was on a street just a few streets over from where I live. So… I ran over and this is what I found on the curb… And here’s more of it loaded in my truck… And a closeup of the mesquite… Here’s a closeup of the maple burl I found in the pile… It’s the best Craig’s List score I’ve ever ...

Workbench Build #31: Wagon Vise Cont'd......

So, we left off with this pile of steel waiting to be turned into a wagon vise… I started with one of the thin pieces. I measured and scored a line the full length to mark the depth of the channel for the 2 rails. Measured for the rail length.. Then with this piece on top I stacked all 3 pieces and clamped them together and cut the first rail to length with a cut off wheel in my angle grinder.
