Tool thoughts #20: Moving Back into my shop

645 days ago by NedB | 2 comments »

Hi folks, I’ve been away from LJ for awhile, mostly because my shop time has been effectively at zero for well over a year. Not anymore. My wife, youngest son and I moved to VA last summer, and back to NY about a month ago. This means that I a) moved most of my tools and lumber not once, but twice in the past year and b) I now have to clean out my shop and put them all back in it! Here’s the plan for the revised shop. I have a 12’x20’ mini barn that my tools ...

Recession, Dealing with the Internet, a Changing Business Formula, & Reading the Times We Are In

812 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 9 comments »

Since my last muse of writing a blog, a lot has happened in my life and business. All of it has been good, I’ve just been so busy that I have not taken the time to write much. For instance, I went to North Carolina last June to teach a woodworking class at the John Campbell Folk School. I had a wonderful time away with the family, met some great guys, and had a wonderful time…...but have not taken time to document the adventure with the photos and stories I gathered while the...

The American Craftsman WorkShop #20: A Little OCD Goes A Long Way

1559 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 24 comments »

I Think I’m Sick… I can’t seem to stop organizing the shop. I thought that I was done organizing and I started to move on with my project but did not get very far. I got sidetracked with getting my taxes together. This led to the realization that I could dispose of 5 years worth of files and paperwork. This led to me emptying out several file storage containers and almost burning up my shredder. I got a bug and started cleaning up the storage room. This allowed m...

The American Craftsman WorkShop #19: Lumber Storage Under Control

1563 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 33 comments »

I Am On Fire! It was -15° outside but I was burning up in the shop with an intense desire to organize the lumber rack and get rid of extra stock. This was the last of three projects that I started during the Christmas/New Years week. 1. Sheet the last unfinished wall with plywood.2. Create a sheet goods organizer3. Organize lumber rack and get rid of extra lumber Here is the before picture of the lumber storage area. But take a look at the lumber and sheet goods area now! ...

The American Craftsman WorkShop #17: Clearing the Lumber Shelves

1565 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 20 comments »

On a Roll After organizing the sheet goods I moved on to the lumber rack. I did not get as much done as I would have liked because I had to go look at a job and I ended up making a couple of models for beam wraps and a light trough. I got the three small shelves that hold stock up to 48” cleared off. I only kept the stickers for lumber and some blocks that hold projects off the table for finishing. I discovered the T-tracks that I intended to install on my bench and chop...

The American Craftsman WorkShop #11: Shop Reorganization - Day 2

1655 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 18 comments »

Getting Closer To Done I don’t think that a person is ever done with organizing the shop but I am getting close to done for this round of organization and resetting the shop. I finished my drywall repairs and painted the wall. I have 3 cans of old paint and all of them are marked “shop walls” but none of them match. My guess is that I did not have them labeled and at some point I opened them for identification, thought it looked like the shop wall color and marked it a...

The American Craftsman WorkShop #10: Reorganizing the Shop - Again!

1655 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 28 comments »

First Snow! Yesterday we woke up to the first snow of the season. We ended up officially receiving 4.6” but it has mostly melted off by this morning. Rita’s garden is looking pretty sad. You may be wondering, and the answer is “yes.” That is a genuine outhouse but the pit has been filled and it is used as a small gardening tool shed. Putting new shakes on the roof is on my honey-do list. On to the shop… I started working yesterday and I got on...

Garage Re-Do #8: Almost There -- Mega Model

1897 days ago by MyOldGarage | 3 comments »

I don’t know how many people have went to this extreme, but it’s about the only thing I have time to do right now . . . it takes very little time to add/refine to the Sketchup model. Here’s what the garage looks like in it’s current form . . it’s about 90% there. I don’t have some things in there yet, but it’s a pretty good picture: Right now the biggest thing is the clutter . . . the “before” photos were a bit of a worst case sce...

Coat Center Project Progress #1: Shop Time Part 1

1936 days ago by RockDoggy | 0 comments »

I’ve begun the shop work on my coat center project, whose (rough) design can be found here in a Google Sketchup v7 file. The goal is to allow my short kids to be able to hang their coats themselves, and also have a place to manage their library books and hats & gloves. There is also a discussion of my progress here during my first shop session on the project. I was able to make a fair amount of progress in about four hours of time, which is unusually productive for me! Enjoy...
