Buying used tools is an under-looked option for low-budget woodworkers.
First of all, I should tell you that I work in a used tool store. So this issue is close to my heart because it is not only a hobby for me but also what brings home the bacon.
Every day at work I inspect, research, appraise, test, buy, clean, fix, restore and then re-sell used tools.
But before I was an employee of the Used Tool Store I was a customer. The Used Tools Store happens to be across the street from the...

You can’t do a project like this without being impressed by the beauty and brevity of the names of the tools. No fancy Roman or Greek words, they’re all earthy old Anglo Saxon or old French: Adze, axe, awl, wedge, mallet, froe, to say nothing of scorp or felloe – I could go on and on, but as we are coming to “saws” and “planes” and “braces”, I thought this was a good time to bring this matter up. The age of these words indicates the venerable history of these tools.
I looked a few of th...

Being the only driver in the house, I am the one who gets the joy of hauling a trailer load of rubbish to the local tip.
I had backed up the trailer to the hopper (who said a woman cant reverse a trailer????) and a young (mid 20s) man was unloading his rubbish into the hopper from his boot (trunk) of his car. I was chatting to him whilst I spaded the junk into the hopper. He was clearing out his granddads shed who had just gone into a nursing home.
He was about to throw a box of stuff i...

Back in college when you had four classes in one day it was just another day. I guess that’s why we send our kids to school while they are young. I don’t feel young.
Here’s the run-down of my day (mercifully all my classes were within two buildings very near each other.) My first session was on chair design with Brian Boggs. If you aren’t familiar with Brian, you need to be. Find him here. Now, I’ve never really had any interest in chairs, knowing that t...

I recently went digging through my late Grandfather’s garage and found a practically new Craftsman 1 1/2hp router with the box, but no instructions. I decided to buy a small router table at a local box store knowing it wasn’t anything great but just something to try my hand at for the time being. I finally got around to using it today. I’m finally finishing the cabinet doors I’ve been putting off for months, and decided to route the dadoes using the table. For some rea...

Warning: the following is written in my blog’s wierd, arcane style… read at your own risk.
Once again the literary blog of Chris Schwartz has stimulated my own (somewhat cranked) chain of consciousness toward the philosophical side of woodworking. “The Schwartz” recently offered a very positive review of Roy Underhill’s newest book (the link is here), which wasn’t fair because I can’t go out and buy it yet, and pre-ordering it only makes me feel like I’m 8 years old and it’s t...

Now that Obama has been inaugurated, I figure it’s safe to say that we might have a new president. I’ve perceived that he’s rather controversial despite the fact that I’ve tried really hard to ignore current events these last few months. I think I’m to where I care a lot more about a thin, wispy shaving coming off of a well-tuned vintage Stanley plane than what people are predicting about the future of our country. My country, dagnabit, sweet land of liberty! So far, I still have the libe...

Ok so after reading tomcat’s blog #5 tool gathering odessy I went down to my shop to look at a few older tools that I again pulled out of my parent’s shed. It seems there has been a good amount of woodworking going on in my family. (Wish I knew my father’s side of the family a little better.) Here is what I found.
One of these saws has a Diston Medalion the other two both say Warrented Superior. These all have been hanging on my wall since I brought them home. I finally ...

This is again a mirror of my Website blog, www.thewoodshepherd.wordpress.com, which I wanted to share with my Lumberjocks friends…
One of the glorious things about being a woodworker today is our ability to be served by the Internet. Through this amazing channel of funneled electrons, we can blog and Twitter and post websites full of our projects and join together with others in songs of praise over the latest Veritas or Lie-Nielsen acquisition, or remind one another to be wary of t...
