What a week for new experiences and big projects. While my nights were spent toiling on the Thorsen Table… and trying new things, the day job had me wrapping my mind around several new things as well.
The last basement dad and I refinished (sub contracting for Owens Corning) included perhaps the pinnacle of woodworking projects – redoing the stairs. Ripping off the 2×8 treads and replacing those with oak, adding oak risers, newel post, railing and 52 spindles.
T...

I’ve decided to build a simple nightstand as my first project (or at least my first project since buying a table saw and joining LumberJocks.com). The basic design of the nightstand comes from a fellow LuberJock. Check out the original here.
Last weekend I bought the lumber, $65 of Red Oak from the local lumberyard with a great hardwood selection. I highly recommend this place (Schutte Lumber) to anybody in the Kansas City area.
I pulled out the mitre saw to chop everything dow...

After a set of long days and late nights, I had the joy of taking the Mission Style Casket to meet the family today. We headed toward each other and met in Great Bend, KS and had lunch and transfered the casket from my little Ranger pickup truck into a covered trailer. After that we shared a lunch at Braum’s, a hamburger and ice cream resteraunt.
I worked late last night and finished up the casket, and installed the liner. Here are some photos showing the final completed look.

A few weeks ago I blogged that my next commission project would be a Mission Style Casket for my Uncle John. He passed away last night, so in the midst of being filled will joy that this project is nearly complete, I am also saddened by his expected death.
Throughout my life, Uncle John has been an “encourager”, despite what path I took. Even when I’m sure he was concerned about decisions I was making, he always showed me respect, and encourgement. The type of “e...

Art-Full Wood Rats
....and so today i am going straight for the soul of the word and writing as one can when they are expelling multi-words ‘off the cuff’ of their heart….
Yes, there are times more often then not, when I will write and milk the word to get at the heart of it’s meaning and then while sitting here waiting for a heady froth, I will go for a twist in the meaning to see if I can get outside the box and examine the art-full word in a new way of meaning...

Progress is definitely being made. I used my new Router Mortising Jig and cut the mortises on the legs and stretchers. The new jig worked far better than I had expected. Woohoo! The plans don’t tell you everything to expect so when I did the first dry fit of the legs and aprons I found that some of the tenons did not properly fit. The mortises were 7/8” deep and the tenons were ¾”. Naturally, if the mortises are in the center of a 1 ¼” leg then the tenons would not fit all the way. I h...

Yesterday morning, my daughter hobbled downstairs and begged for a massage to loosen up her back which had taken on a muscle spasm while she prepared for work. She couldn’t bend, twist, or even breathe deeply. Poor girl. I got her moving and off she went to work.
A couple hours later as I was picking up some wood that Rick had transferred into the basement via the basement window, my lower back seized up and I was hit with a brief panic about how I was going to make it back up those ...

Ok, ok, ok.
I have seen all your beautiful beautiful tables. So, now I have been shamed that I have not made one, I am officially joining the challenge.
I had a slab of beautiful oak that would be just the size for four table legs and another 3/4” piece that would be great for the aprons.
Last weekend I cut the legs and planned them to size and marked all the legs to accept a mortise.
I cut the aprons to size and made the tenons. I still have not established the design...

Ok, so I have been out of the shop for over a week now. Of all things, I caught a cold this time of the year. The aches, pains, coughing, etc have made it impossible and dangerous to work in the shop. So, I have sat around all day watching dvd’s and playing video games. I was not even well enough to read the Lumberjocks web site. I know I have missed much, but will be catching up in the next few weeks. While still under the weather, I will try a few hours in the shop today.

I have one more apron to cut out on the scroll saw. So tedious, hard for me to sit for long and use the saw. Few minutes at a time. Still I got lucky again. I was going out to visit my Mom’s grave today and right across from the cemetary along side the road was a hugh red oak that had just been dropped. I stopped talked with Mom for a minute then took off for city hall a the DPW. My cousin works for the town DPW and he was there working on something on the work bench. I asked him where...
