We are proud of the projects that you, our members, share with us here at LumberJocks.com and we are always thinking of ways to recognize and showcase them with the rest of the world! We currently have a “Daily Top 15” on our homepage and now we will be posting an “Editor’s Choice” on LumberJocks as well as on the following two social media sites: Facebook and Pinterest. The projects will be selected by Debbie and myself and posted throughout the week. The goal is “on a daily basis”. So...
It’s time to improve our comments/replies browsing system again. Our unique sliding comments work well for quick reading of the new comments but they are far from ideal for the first time readers of the very long threads like Handplanes of your dreams and many others. So I decided to add a separate comments/replies page for every post. You will see the link to this page on the right side of the comments pagination section: As you can see, I also reduced the number of sliding c...
Let’s see what you think about this update. I’m quite excited about it and am eager to see how it evolves down the road. I personally found home page a bit boring for some time and was thinking about the way to make it more interesting – possibly by adding a bit of competitiveness to it as it never hurts. The final update is more robust and it awards the most active projects posted daily. So what’s it all about? The most recent projects were replaced by Daily Top 15...
Brave idea from our own MsDebbieP turned our to be very popular. Offering the talented LumberJocks to lead a niche class and teach other members some serious skills for free was the foundation of the LJ Woodworking Classes. Five classes have been already finished, two are just running and we already have three upcoming classes coming soon. All the news about the Classes were hard to follow and everything was happening behind the scenes. Until now… new stylish and compact Classes page...
I’ve decided to resolve the major annoyance related to posting high quality blog entries on LumberJocks. If you want to add some nice photos to your posts and don’t like spending time with 3rd party photo sharing sites like Photobucket this new feature is just for you. After taking an estimated storage and bandwidth into account and doing some math, I came to a conclusion that it’s finally the right time to create a new bucket at the Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service) for...
I’m proud to announce one of the greatest LumberJocks upgrades ever. Technical and user experience implementation raises the bar again and it also solves quite a few site bottlenecks with ease. These bottlenecks were the main driving force behind this upgrade but I’m very excited with how this makes LJ easier and faster to use. It even brings sort of artificial intelligence to your browsing experience here. Hope you will find it a pleasure to use down the road too. So first let...
I just added the score index to the LJ projects. It’s calculated as the weighted average of the projects’s views, comments and favorites. I will keep fine-tuning this formula down the road. The goal is to uncover the most interesting or hot projects based on how other members respond to it. You can test it on the projects posted in the last 30 days by clicking on HOT PROJECTS link on the Projects page: As you can see there is also the SILENT PROJECTS link that will show ...
Not one of the positive features but unfortunately it seems like there was no chance to avoid adding self-managed blocklists here at LumberJocks. Requested by many members recently I believe this new feature will be vital for further growth and good atmosphere here. When you choose to block someone, it means they: Can’t comment on your profile Can’t comment on your posts (projects, blog entries, forum topics, reviews, workshop) Are removed as your buddy, and you are re...
I’m finally finding some time to work on updates and new features instead of spending most of it on support and maintenance issues. There were some small updates here at LumberJocks in the recent days and more are coming soon. I will write about them in a separate post later. Now I’d like you to become familiar with the restructured and much extended HomeRefurbers Forums: Interior Home ImprovementAre you making structural changes to the interior of your home? Whether it i...
As you may already know I used several 3rd party services to power LumberJocks.com widgets. Well I finally had time to design and code following two essential widgets myself: Latest LJ Projects Nice way to display latest LJ projects on your website or blog. Just go to the projects page, scroll down and click on GRAB WIDGET button. You can see it in action on Al's website and Marc's blog. Latest Personal Activity Great for showing your latest LJ activity on your separate web...
