Got a bit of time in the workshop for ME today, making an endtable for the sofa in the family room… this is where Deb does her crocheting and needed two things… a table for her cuppa.. and a drawer to hide her wool and things away from the puppies…
The other day we found a really nice woven basket… so begins the build of a cabinet to house the basket..
The top is two pieces of Narra [New Guinea Rosewood] glued up…
The main carcass is also made from Narra...

I have three commissions on the books… this week I went down and picked up the rough sawn boards of New Guinea Rosewood that I needed to make … a large bookcase, a smaller bookcase for DVD and CD… and a tallboy [chest of drawers].
I purchased 60 lengths 2.1 metres long…[7 ft] which when dressed down, will measure 125 by 25 mm [1 by 5 inch..]
For all the box/toy makers out there… I will have small peices that could be useful to you… so gi...

Bit of a bugger getting all these pieces in place, clamping and making sure it is all square…
Half way there…
Why you need lots of clamps…and this is really only a small glue up…
A close up of the grate… note there are a few gaps… hey this was a first for me…

In my last post In the round the second pic shows a single stripe .. double chevron [second gen] ..This blog will show in part how this was done…
To start make two grooves on both faces of a board… in this case virgin hoop pine…[virgin meaning naturally grown… not plantation timber]
Inlay two different timbers… in this case purple heart
And narra [new guinea rosewood]This is instead of one strip of timber between two others…Shown end on…
I...

Making a mirror frame for Heather’s office at Brent. Here’s her sketchup.
A shot of the assembly before finish.
Here’s the Narra outer frame with first coat of lacquer applied.
Here is the finished outer frame.
It is a work still in process. Will try to get up a finished picture soon.

The main frame is of 3” wide Narra. The corners are mitered lap joints for strength as the mirror glass itself weighs over 40 lbs.
The ‘outer’ frame is notched to accept a 1” wide by 1/2” Kamagong (Ebony) inner frame for decorative accent.
The Kamagong inner frame has lap joints and fits together this way.
And here’s the sketch-up drawing

Varying Designs
Using Sketchup, I had drawn a lot of possibilities for a 12 Rhombus combinations. Here is the photo of the one I like…
Cutting the rhombus. Then, next step is cutting the rhombus. I set my compound saw to 30 deg then cut so many pieces one by one. Thanks for Daddy (Dad-in-Law) who also helped in cutting them. I could not find a photo..
AssemblySorting out according to colors and blend will shorten the time. Also the correct thickness will save time.

Currently ongoing construction is a jewelry box but big enought to be called as armoire. I have done it in 3 sectors: the foot, the lower drawers, and the top drawers.
THE FOOTThe first difficulty is to decide whether I can make a short cabriole leg for the front. That was a long process due Narra that I have is medium hard. Additionally, I dont have bandsaw and I have to use jigsaw. I bought 4 inch jigsaw blade. It was not a perfect one but it was okay.
The secret chamber will also...

PART II
I suggest that you read first the first part of the series for a better understanding…
The drawer
In making the drawer, all the difficulties were turned to an easy task because of proactiveness. We cannot avoid changes of idea, plans, joints, size, cuts and other problems while doing the job. I don’t have blue pirnts neither actual plans in doing this project specially when you deal with recycled or scraps materials. Here you can find: undersize, grooves, dents...
