Our Summer Woodworking Awards Event has come and gone and the Award recipients are already enjoying their well-deserved gifts. With yet another challenge completed, it’s time to start planning our next event and what better time to think of helping others than right now. Not only is the change of seasons heading us towards the time of year that many children look forward to (Christmas) but many children are also being threatened right now, by the effects of natural disasters as well as the...
I’ve thought carefully and done a heck of a lot of research on marketing, and brand building, and all that business related stuff. I’ve raised enough money to get started. I’ve built up an inventory. And now, FINALLY, i’m almost ready to start a business selling turned pens. It’s just going to be a side job. An additional source of money, and a bit of practice in the world of business.i still need to do some things though. #1. I NEED A NAME : iR...
I stumbled across an article today. It was linked from the Wood Whisperer newsletter. You can find a link at the end of this article. It touched on a few good points about why we struggle with charging an appropriate amount for our efforts. To summarize, (and relate it to our specific craft) it said we do three main things wrong when deciding on a price. The first is taking our ability for granted. This comes natural to us. It’s no big deal. How can we charge hundreds or thousands of do...
Hellow my Fellow Jocks, Bloggers and watchers! Today I just wanted to post a little blog that seems to happen to me and probably some of you or will eventually anyway. Money: The Greater of all Evil, What makes the World go around, If you got it, you don’t need it, If you don’t need it, you got it. Time: Some have lots of it, Some don’t have any of it, Some it’s a little iffy, they may have it but not lots of it. Feeling Like It: Some feel great, o...
Just like many woodworkers out there, I am obsessed with my tools. They perform a function in my shop but they are more than just functional. They provide a sense of pride and aesthetic beauty that only my fellow woodworkers can understand. We spend countless hours mulling over specs. reviews, online videos, pricing, and countless other factors to find that perfect addition to the shop. When we find that perfect hand tool or piece of machinery, we obsess over fine tuning, adding accessori...
So like many here, this summer has been one of hardship, and little work, and lots of stress. But as outlined earlier, that’s why this blog is titled the way it is. This spring didn’t see as many trees fall as I figured would, so not as much work there. One old box elder did take a plunge…right into the fork of a large mulberry tree, splitting it about 10 ft….but still 10ft off the ground….and over a fence right into the neighbor’s garden…so that w...
I am jumping into my woodworking career with both feet. Unfortunately, this is not cheap and I do not have any tools worth anything. Also, having a handicap, I am on a very limited income. So, what is a woodworker to do? Start small, build up tools one at a time, accumulate better tools as you go. This is the plan, however, I need to start somewhere and my income only pays the bills that I have. I have found a possible source for start up expenses. I just signed up for a Crowd Funding webs...
