I recently had the pleasure of reviewing and making a video for the MLCS horizontal router table. In this video, I show how to make Mortises and Tenons easily on this machine. Also covered in the video is raised panels, crown molding and custom molding.
The machine is nice, and definitely as some advantages. Making raised panels or molding is similar to the action of using a jointer. You are passing the work over the bit with downward pressure. It feels much safer than standing it on it...

Recently I’ve been updating my kitchen. Resurfaced the cabinets, built a new top, stone on the wall, new wood floors etc. Since the kids have moved on, I’ve decided to build an island with stools. The top will probably have stone recessed in the center to match the wall treatment. This will also allow us to set hot pans etc. on it. Right now I’m waiting on my new table saw to arrive, so I’ll begin the project as soon as it gets here. I’ll also be running crown m...

I wanted to tell a little more about my experience with crafting my own crown molding, and share a couple of lessons I learned along the way.
Previously, I showed how I formed and sanded the profile on the last blog of this topic, and so today I thought I would complete the task by showing the installation of the molding, and a few “gems” I discovered along the way.

The TradeOn Wed. Night I did a talk for my neighborhood association’s general meeting on our house restoration and my furniture projects. I talked in length about using recycled wood.
Afterwards a neighbor contacted me and offered some wood that had been stored in his garage for 20 years. At the time that he bought it, it was milled from old growth fir. I took home a small stash of fir, including a few 12” wide boards…
and a 7/8” thick, 14 footer.

Almost nowBefore I get to the current work on the kitchen, let’s play catch-up.:
After a successful but expensive run on the living room and dining room we decided to keep on with the back of the house. We had two rooms to strip/stain and replaster/paint. Plus the L-shaped hallway.

The PlanSave the plaster, the upper cabinets, all millwork, and the windows (is that millwork). The douglas fir cabinets had been refaced in the long past. Could it be removed?

Just thought I’d throw this out there:PlansNow.Com released a PDF document today on a technique to build up composite crown molding. Makes it very easy to see how such a beautiful result is achieved.
They usually release one technique article and one free plan per week to their email newsletter subscribers, such as last week’s 15 tips for sanding success.

Well, I got a call from a developer we do finish trim design and installs for and he asked me to contact the new owner of one of the homes they built that we did all the finish trim inside. Got a chance to snap a few more pics real quick so I thought I’d add them to the blog. Heres the DiningRoom Pillars, I thought they needed a crown head but the owner wanted to be cheap…sigh..

This tutorial is for setting up a molder head and creating molding on a Shopsmith Mark V, Model 520. Obviously, much of the information here can be “translated” to a different model Shopsmith or even to a stand-alone table saw. When done properly, with proper setup and appropriate safety precautions, using a molder head on a table saw is perfectly safe and produces beautiful molding.
