My Journey As A Scroll Saw Pattern Designer #825: Differences

240 days ago by Sheila Landry (scrollgirl) | 5 comments »

Many times when we hear of two people having ‘differences’ we think it is a bad thing. The mere term brings to mind visions of conflict and discontent. But when looking at things from another perspective, perhaps as an artist or creative person, differences are not viewed as something negative, but rather sought after in order to provide value through uniqueness and individuality. The more unique they are, the higher the value. I think that it is interesting that a word woul...

Beginner Questionaire for JN1C3 #3: Sizing down Plywood

246 days ago by Jason™ | 18 comments »

Hello again everyone I would like to ask another question on here since all the previous ones I have asked were answered and now I understand what I was doing wrong or what the case was. I am currently gathering materials needed to build a TableSaw Workstation that can be seen in the Shopnotes issue #89 The question for this series is what are some of your ways of cutting down large sheets of plywood or MDF and getting them squared up?? “Using a Benchtop size Table saw” I D...

DoDecaHedron Light Fixtures #3: Sanding is looking nice

254 days ago by MarkTheFiddler | 12 comments »

I’m actually rather surprised and and rather pleased about how the dodecahedron light fixture is coming. So much so that I want to take advantage of the grain showing through. I used poplar. Unfortunately I do have a little wood filler here and there and the inside is also filled. Any advice on what type of stain. In a ddition, can you provide some advice on sealing it. What ever I use will have to stand up to a little heat given it’s purpose as a pendant light.

DoDecaHedron Light Fixtures #2: It's actually looking OK

257 days ago by MarkTheFiddler | 3 comments »

Howdy, I have a lot more sanding to do and I’m filling the inside. The outside of the structure has been rough sanded and filled. I’m not real happy that I used filler at all but that’s how it goes when you are a rookie. What you might be able to see here is that I used poplar because it is very light weight for a lighting pendant. the outside is actually crosscut. If it comes out as well as I hope it will, I ought to get a nice look out of it. The insides are goin...

I know this Isn’t a woodworking project, but I wanted to show you my tile work. My mom wanted tile above the shower, plus I just got a tile saw so that would be handy. This is a huge project, so my Grampa helped me out. It took a lot of work, but It’s done and Mom loves it! Having my Grampa here was really handy too. Thanks,AJ

DVD Cabinet #1: Getting Started - Milling cabinet sides

259 days ago by SPHinTampa | 1 comment »

I have far too many DVDs and not enough places to put them so I decided to build a DVD cabinet. My design is based on a desire to make a large dovetailed cabinet and the fact that I have a bunch of left over wenge, padauk and a 1/2 sheet of bird’s eye maple plywood. I am not a sophisticated draftsman and use Microsoft PowerPoint to get the basic proportions right. In my first session: 1. Mocked up drawer using shop scraps2. Glued up panels3. Flattened one side using plane...

Table Saw Upgrade to Powermatic 66 3 phase

264 days ago by amplifiednation | 3 comments »

Just joined the forum after reading countless posts…I have learned so much I want a chance to give back and share an experience I am having this week upgrading my main table saw to a Powermatic 66. This saw has a three phase motor, I’ll be using a TECO VFD to get three phase. I’m having 220v being run to the saw’s location on Friday, and that electrician will help me get the VFD wired. I am a cabinet maker who builds speaker cabinets and guitar amplifier cabinet...

Drying Burl Wood #2: Consideration #2 By OregonBurls

265 days ago by OregonBurls | 3 comments »

Consideration #2 If you have fruit tree burls or burls like madrone there are two ways you can semi-stabilize the burl.1. Pressure cook the block:a. I have a friend in New York who gets 12×12 x 6 blocks of Madrone and when he gets them the first thing he does is throws them in the pressure cooker for one hour.b. Let the water cool down until you can comfortably take the blocks out with your hands. Then re-wax them until ready to turn the bloc...
