How to find and harvest legal burls!

47 days ago by OregonBurls | 32 comments »

Hey everyone, It was suggested that I start a discussion on how to find and harvest burls. Please give your input also. I don’t deal with straight grain that often. I cut and sell burls for a living so here is what I know. It is illegal to harvest a burl without permission. of course if it is on your own property you can give yourself permission. What I do is put an ad on Craig’s list saying I want your burls. Most people don’t know what burls are. So you don’t get that many calls....

Design of a Static Table Saw

48 days ago by k1114n | 6 comments »

The aim of this project is to design and build a static-blade saw that replaces the rotating blade with a japanese handsaw blade which is very thin and removes little wood during the cut leaving a very thin ‘kerf’ (< 0.5mm). Japanese handsaws are well known to cut aggressively and unlike european saws they do so on the pull stroke. Also, the blades in japanese handsaws are designed to be easily removed from the handle. If this blade were fixed at a slight slope away from the in...

Natural Edge Burl Wood Furniture #1: Box Elder Burl Coffee Table

48 days ago by OregonBurls | 7 comments »

Hi everyone, I started this project a few days ago. It is a Box Elder Burl that I hollowed out with an arbortech and plan on getting a 36” glass top for it. I am wandering how to finish the outside. Due to the pressure washing. It has made the surface a little ruff. So I am not sure if I should sand it and just show the figure or keep it natural. I still have a little bit more of hollowing it out. I also plan on sanding the inside and figure out how to make the figure pop out visuall...

Boat building #1: In need of spiritual applicant with free plans

63 days ago by threehands | 2 comments »

Hello all. I am in need. A need to fill the void. The void is an empty spot. The empty spot in an area of the shop I haven’t seen in years. There actually is a floor under all that “junk” as the bride would say. (I say golden treasures.) But, what I need now is spiritual help and a set of free plans for a drift boat or dory. I know I can build one, just need the plans. Have looked and downloaded several but cant find ones concerning a Montana style. Those guys craft some s...

CENTAUR counter, mostrador CENTAURO #6: When it was finished, the client decided to introduce a change: to divide the desk.

76 days ago by Alejandro Galo Moreno | 2 comments »

The client decided to make a change: he need an access to the desk’s inside, when her products are exposed on the counter. After thinking about the possible solutions and having to keep the structural solidity, I decided that easiest alternative was to cut the desk board. One of the questions was how to make the holes for the axes in such a small space. I found only one solution: to tear off the central piece for drilling, so that after glueing, the piece could looked like before manipu...

I have just five minutes, but I’ll put some pictures of the work. The raw work is over: God willingly, tomorrow I’ll began with adjusting, sanding and finishing. What do you think of the whole? Tonight I’ll sit for a while and try to post a video. See you later, ...”sawdust-gators”.

CENTAUR counter, mostrador CENTAURO #3: My workflow always decreases towards the end ...

81 days ago by Alejandro Galo Moreno | 9 comments »

Although all my previous designing, my efforts to get the piece of furniture to the very best end I can, usually met lots of minor cuestions to be solved, before finishing the job to my complete satisfaction. And this is the reason why the work sticks to the bench towards the end. Actually I’m never 100% satisfy. That’s the price I pay for the personal discoverys that represent my designs. Others don’t find it that much important, but it i...

My first project on here is to build this bed frame: I’ve asked a couple questions iin a forum and I got great response. I got it in my mind how to do everything on this project but the radius edges. This bed frame is going for $1499 on ebay, for $1499, I can buy all the tools and lumbar and stain and mess up about a dozen times for $1500 so I’m taking this on as a challenge for me.
