Hey everyone, It was suggested that I start a discussion on how to find and harvest burls. Please give your input also.
I don’t deal with straight grain that often. I cut and sell burls for a living so here is what I know.
It is illegal to harvest a burl without permission. of course if it is on your own property you can give yourself permission. What I do is put an ad on Craig’s list saying I want your burls. Most people don’t know what burls are. So you don’t get that many calls....

for years ( 45 ) i have been using the jointer , and from day 1 , my shop master ( Lincoln Morinaga ) said
that this tool was the most dangerous in the shop . in my work , i often have to joint 12’ boards or longer .with or without a helper , this is a tedious and risky task , as you have to force the board down with lots of pressure,to counteract the forces of gravity and increasing outboard sagging .my thoughts , have allways led me to using gravity in my favor , and letting my ̶...

I have been struggling with the final arm rest/leg design of a redwood patio chair, so I thought I would document the process and the progress thus far and as it moves forward (at a snails pace).

I feel really strange writing this I really don’t like to publicize my personal problems but this one goes way beyond just myself.Recently about a month ago my dad passed away . My wife and I have been busy getting his things in order, (he liked collecting cars , boats Etc). I recently picked up some 8/4 Walnut and a beautiful piece of 4/4 Jatoba. I have decided to build a Hall table and have come up with two designs that would exploit the grain of the Jatoba. I would like your input on which design you lean toward.
Idea 1 is modern and the concept is that the frame is mitered in two directions to create a continuous “ribbon” of walnut that is unbroken. I will either do a contrasting keyed miter joint or a miter slip joint. I may or may not ...

Like most individuals, I consider myself to be self-taught. I have no formal training as a woodworker, I did not apprentice under anyone, nor do I possess any formal education in design or art. Well here I go. For over 40 years I have smoked real heavy. 2- 4 packs a day. I have enphasima , asma and every thing else that goes with it. they said only 20% of my l;ungs left. and still smoking. Everyone has bneen trying to get me to stop smoking and over this past weekend My oldest son and I was out talking and he said that if I would stop smoking that he would stop also. Just a quick peak at what I got up to today when I was not checking the hundreds of emails from all the LJs who commented on my last few posts.. Thank you very much.. I did not realize how much of my daily routine now revolves around this site..
