MCAD Furniture Class #4: Building a Scale Model

574 days ago by Jeff | 14 comments »

As mentioned in the previous entry, at the suggestion of my instructor, I modified the design such that the whole top would be a torsion grid. This approach did present its own problem though. Since the design called for the ‘leg’ to act as a massive tenon seated in the underside of the top, I would need a lot of bulk around the leg. I considered laminating solid wood pieces to build it up. I decided against that; I can’t recall why. Instead, I opted to take what I call t...

random #19: Most elaborate dollhouse ever: Moscow?

182 days ago by Gary Fixler | 10 comments »

I continue to be amazed by how many amazing things there are out there by which to be amazed. I find new ones every day online, and have for the last decade. One I found this week is a 1/500th scale miniature of all of Moscow, built in 1988, and maintained ever since. It looks to be all balsa, or basswood. If the city changes, or a new house is built, they correct the model. It’s stayed current for the last 2 decades. Tons more pictures How hard could it be?

Traditional Workbench #2: Updated Sketchup Model

330 days ago by ChicoWoodnut | 8 comments »

I haven’t had much shop time in December due to work related travel/projects and Holiday related travel/activities but I did manage to take the laptop with me and do some off time work on this model. I decided to add a case of drawers for tool storage and I added all the joinery details. Here is the SU model. I am interested in the SU community’s input and critique. Since I am almost positive that DaveR is going to say it is “Heavy” I am waiting for him to ex...

Sketchup Models #4: Lee Valley/Veritas Tail Vise Screw Hardware

142 days ago by PurpLev | 7 comments »

Now that I received the tail vises for my workbench, I have modeled them in Sketchup so that I can play around with it for a more precise location and drilling plans before I have to physically deal with the heavy top material. This model is design to be light and fast, and as such does not go into vast details such as screw spirals etc. Instead it is designed to be used for measurements and sizing, both in terms of the actual hardware measurements and shapes, and screw hole locations. ...

Dustless Sanding (really!): Rigging up your own vacuum system with the Porter Cable Model 333

911 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 7 comments »

The hardest dust for me to breathe is the fine stuff that comes out of the orbital sander. I have used the Porter Cable Model 333 for about 10 years now, and have done a lot of sanding with it. I am sure there are better, more expensive sanders, but I like it, at least so far. Here is a photo showing my collection. The one I bought two years ago (gray one with yellow tinted lacquer overspray on it) is now dead, but I keep ...

Sketchup Models #3: Woodpecker's Router Table Plate

269 days ago by PurpLev | 5 comments »

This is a model for the Woodpecker’s router table plate sized 9-1/4” x 11-3/4”. it is the same size for all their lift/non lift plates, also same size for the pinnacle plates, Jessem plates, and incra plates that are 9-1/4”x11-3/4” in size. the material width is 3/8” but can be modified to fit other materials. (although it is advertised as 9-1/4”x11-3/4” is it slightly different – I think the margin of error is in the 1/1000 range. but ...

Sketchup Models #1: The Original Incra Jig

284 days ago by PurpLev | 3 comments »

while working and designing my router table I noticed that there are no Incra Models on Sketchup 3D Warehouse at all. I do not have any of the LS positioner systems, and would have liked to have a 3D model version to incorporate into my design and see how it would work with different sizes table tops… I do however have the Original Incra Jig, and figured I could model it out, and put it on 3D Warehouse for anyone that might be interested in it, and could use it in their designs. so w...
