Making a Small Wooden Box #1: Getting Started

839 days ago by Don | 22 comments »

I blogged a couple of weeks ago about what I should charge for a small box I was asked to make. I thought that those of you who haven’t delved into the wonderful world of box making might like to journey along with me as I make this commissioned box. I was given the outside dimension for the box, as the owner intends to place it in a chest of drawers, so it must fit the size constraints of the drawer. The box will be 95mm high x 360mm wide x 240mm deep (approximately 3.75” x 14...

Celtic Knot Pens #1: One way to do it

812 days ago by Gary | 16 comments »

This was requested from multiple sites, so I did one for everybody. Here’s some photos of my process;I only had enough time to do a two-ring knot, but it’sall the same to make a four-ring knot accurately if you follow these steps. This shows the miter sled, the length of contrasting wood for the slices, and the bloodwood blank I’m going to use. I’ve already squared the blank so that all four sides are the same size.I randomly pick a side and mark it 1.Side 2 i...

The Super Sled #3: Mitering Fence

235 days ago by John Nixon | 6 comments »

I just completed the latest video in the Super Sled series – the Miter Fence. Cut accurate and reproducible miters with this shop made miter fence designed for use with the Super Sled. Using a stop block for repeatable cuts allows you to get the exact same size pieces each and every time you miter. This versatile setup can cut a wide range of angles safely and accurately on the table saw. The Miter Fence video for the Super Sled series shows the construction of the fence and two dif...

Dust Collection Progress..

445 days ago by CraftsmanCollective | 15 comments »

So in my first blog entry I touched on my dust collection progress. I’ve recieved a bit of interest with it so I thought I might share some of what I’ve learned to help others get a head start on thier system or to improve the system they already have. I’ve spent a ton of time researching and testing this stuff and can geniunely say that what I post here works exceptionally well. I do alot of work with MDF and we all know of the hazards of wood dust, especially MDF. Im ...

A very large walnut and walnut burl credenza (PIX)

526 days ago by John Fry | 20 comments »

This very large, commissioned credenza was designed as an entertainment center to sit below a big, wall mounted, plasma TV. It is 76” wide 24-1/2” deep, and 34” tall. The cabinet and base are all solid walnut and the doors are bookmatched walnut burl veneers both inside and out. But first I want to thank everyone who visited and responded to my last blog; A glass top table with opposing arches And as always, I welcome your comments AND critiques on this latest project. The mai...

Walnut Coffee Table Construction

565 days ago by Woodhacker | 13 comments »

When I returned to woodworking several years ago my nephew had been talking about a particular style of “coffee” table he’d seen online somewhere and was describing it to me. Since he’d just announced plans to marry, I told him I’d make him, and his fiancée, the table as a wedding gift. He showed me some online photos of the table, which I used as the basic, general design plan. The joinery I chose is original but the style was taken from the photos. This piece is the result: ...

Grandpa's Box #3: Finishing Up

517 days ago by gizmodyne | 6 comments »

Finishing the lidI wanted to get the lid to fit tight, so I cut a piece of ply to fit the box and then centered it under the lid. I used this to scribe my layout lines.I taped the corners of the box to help minimize tearout. Pushstick was used for actual operation. I busted out Wonder Boy for trimming the lid to perfection.Finished rabbet. (Note Kristin’s toes)I cut and glued more keys to secure the miters.I used a file to follow the plane this time. As long as you work away from the co...

Boxes #2: Bookmatched Box

655 days ago by gizmodyne | 20 comments »

I felt like building something small and box-like this weekend. (Time to play with the new saw too). So I headed to the scrap pile. My goal was to chase the grain around the outside of the box. Just for fun. After a false start I got the hang of it. It is kind of mind twisting. How it workedI found a nice specimen.A piece of neglected walnut. After jointing Resawn to bookmatch. A cool little pattern. Checking out the grain pattern after cutting 45 degree miters. It actually wra...

Hard lessons #4: In Search of the Perfect Miter

407 days ago by mhawkins2 | 7 comments »

I am beginning to think that a dead on PERFECT miter is about like big foot or the Loch Ness monster. We’ve all heard of it, a few claim to have achieved it, most of us probably don’t believe it. I am an engineer in occupation and by nature, so when I say perfect; I mean PERFECT. Dead on 45 degree not 44.99 nor 45.01. The vertical face of the wood is completely vertical as is the blade so the sides don’t tilt. And the wood is absolutely of consistent thickness so the re...
