I blogged a couple of weeks ago about what I should charge for a small box I was asked to make.
I thought that those of you who haven’t delved into the wonderful world of box making might like to journey along with me as I make this commissioned box. This was requested from multiple sites, so I did one for everybody.
Here’s some photos of my process;I only had enough time to do a two-ring knot, but it’sall the same to make a four-ring knot accurately if you follow these steps.

So in my first blog entry I touched on my dust collection progress. I’ve recieved a bit of interest with it so I thought I might share some of what I’ve learned to help others get a head start on thier system or to improve the system they already have. This very large, commissioned credenza was designed as an entertainment center to sit below a big, wall mounted, plasma TV. It is 76” wide 24-1/2” deep, and 34” tall. The cabinet and base are all solid walnut and the doors are bookmatched walnut burl veneers both inside and out.

When I returned to woodworking several years ago my nephew had been talking about a particular style of “coffee” table he’d seen online somewhere and was describing it to me. Since he’d just announced plans to marry, I told him I’d make him, and his fiancée, the table as a wedding gift.
He showed me some online photos of the table, which I used as the basic, general design plan. The joinery I chose is original but the style was taken from the photos.

Finishing the lidI wanted to get the lid to fit tight, so I cut a piece of ply to fit the box and then centered it under the lid. I used this to scribe my layout lines.I taped the corners of the box to help minimize tearout. Pushstick was used for actual operation. I felt like building something small and box-like this weekend. (Time to play with the new saw too). So I headed to the scrap pile. My goal was to chase the grain around the outside of the box. Just for fun.
After a false start I got the hang of it. It is kind of mind twisting.

I am beginning to think that a dead on PERFECT miter is about like big foot or the Loch Ness monster. We’ve all heard of it, a few claim to have achieved it, most of us probably don’t believe it. I am an engineer in occupation and by nature, so when I say perfect; I mean PERFECT. Dead on 45 degree not 44.99 nor 45.01.
